Syros, Argostoli - information sought

Anyone been to Syros or Argostoli lately?

Last time (June 2006) I was in Ermoupolis, the main harbour of Syros, a marina in the south corner had been completed, electricity points and all. Several boats were moored there and some were laid up afloat, but there was no management and the power and water hadn't actually been turned on.

Any change?

Same question about Argostoli marina, except that a guy there kept chasing people away who tried to moor up in 2005.

I’ve not been to Argostoli since September ’05, so someone may have more recent information, but the shell of the ‘marina’ opposite the town provides very little effective shelter from prevailing northwesterlies, primarily because the outer piers are just that – they aren’t proper solid harbour walls, so swell is not prevented from entering the 'marina'!

In north-westerlies above F5 the marina experiences a scend that can be powerful enough to smash a boat against the quay and cause considerable damage, especially if on the windward side of the piers. This would be why people get 'chased away' - a number of boats have been severely damaged here.

The only reasonable shelter in the 'marina' is close to the root of the piers farthest from the entrance, but when I was last there most of the decent spots were taken by small local boats.

On a more positive note, I laid up ashore on the hardstanding at the marina over the winter of 04/05, paying a mobile crane 80 euros each way to lift in/out and using scrap timber that I cut to size as shores.

I was in Argostoli last year. My friends cat is moored in the 'un adopted' marina opposite the main town.

As at last Friday it was still in the water there, although he was considering getting it lifted out in the next couple of weeks.

He is resident in Kefalonia since July last year and left his boat on the hard in that marina over the winter.

I think they get the occasional visit from officials. They take the names of the owners but nothing ever happens.
