Syncro on new Volvo D6\'s

Hi

Has anyone had any experience with the new Volvo D6's 350hp. I have a twin installation and apparently there is supposed to be a little blue equals sign that lights up on the EVC control panel to show the engines are running in sync. According to the manual as long as the engines are within a specified rpm of each other the EVC will match each rpm for rpm and hey presto the light comes on.

Maybe I am a thicko but although I can see the symbol on the control panel I have never yet got it to light up, am I missing something?.

I have only racked up 12 hrs so far from new, is it something that is adjusted at first service.

Thanks

Mine worked straight out of the box, as it were, You need to press the button marked with a gear symbol and they synchronise above 750rpm.The engines need to be within 200rpm of each other. Once the button has been pressed it operates automatically until you disable it by pressing it again.

Great, Thanks for that.

What looks to be the gear symbol on my panel is pictured in the manual as the instrument light control, however maybe it has a second function, I shall hot foot it down to the marina today an try again.

Cheers.

Nautic, the advice given by passitivelypossed above is not correct for EVC, he seems to be giving you the steps for EDC

On EVC there is a blue LED in each control unit, by which I mean the little panel(s) that has the 2x D (=Diagnostic) buttons, the instrument panel illum button, and the 2x N (=Neutral) buttons. The blue LED is in the centreline of this unit, near the bottom. It is round, not =, shape. It's almost invisible unless illuminated.

The engine synch is automatic, you dont press any button to make it happen. I forget the exact detail but if you are above say 1200rpm and the throttle sticks are nearly level, it will automatically synch after 15 secs or so and the blue synch LED illuminates

Ah ha

Thats sounds like it, I tried the button this pm that looks like the light button and it definitely is for the lights. However my blue light does'nt come on at any rpm.

I am thinking that when the engineer came to commission the engines he didn't program the EVC unit properly. He had to call his office and some other guy talked him through it on the phone. I was a bit worried as he could'nt start the engines at all for the first hour until I got off the boat and was walking back to the clubhouse and noticed that the drives were still up. I jumped back on and said they will not start until the legs are down to which he replied the legs had nothing to do with starting the engines. When his back was turned I dropped them down and turned the keys and hey presto they started.

Would you know where I could get info on programing the EVC from scratch without having to phone Volvo as I am sure they will tell me to go back to the dealer.

I think as you say it needs commissioning properly. My equalisation comes on automatically over 800 rpm. I know its not much help but mine have worked perfectly from day one. Great engines and very economical. Just coming up to first service.

Yup sounds correct. Dealers often not up to date on this stuff as the software changes all the time. I will give you email addr of a good technical guy at Volvo, a Swede based in their watford HQ. So long as you dont overload him with questions he will be helpful I think. He knows much of the techy EVC stuff. Will do it tomorrow, it's on my work puter

You can buy the programming palm pilot device to mess about, but I haven't had guts to do that yet. I just bort the EVC electronic display which gives you access to a lot of data and trend graphs, and NMEA interface box so it computes range (cos it knows remaining fuel volume, fuel burn rate, and NMEA boat speed) but have not installed it yet, saturday maybe

Ok Brill, that would be great.

The trick bits you mention sound the dogs dooffers, where could I get one of those.

I am really impressed with these D6's loads of lovely creamy smooth power right throughout the rev range. What gets me is the fantastic extra poke you get from 2500 rpm to 3500rpm even on an 11 ton sports cruiser it just picks up its skirt and goes like the divel and consumption is fantastic. On our delivery trip from Liverpool to the Isle of Man we burnt 220 litres, our previous TAMD 75's woud have burnt twice that.

Last weekend we did the first max power trials and even with half fuel, full water and all the stuff you always seem to have on board we clocked (allowing for tide) 37.4 knts on the GPS which is 1.4knts better than the factory state. Mind you its quite scary at that speed with a 45' boat on outdrives the slightest input of helm and your off like a little speed boat, bags of fun though, you really feel you are connected to the boat unlike shaft drive which always seems a little dead in the water.

If your referring to Harald Karsberg, unfortunately he is no longer based in the UK I believe he is now based in USA for Penta.

Yes I was referring to harald. Really good guy, knowledgeable and always happy to send pdfs of tekky stuff to solve problems. I guess he might still help from his new location - if we dont overburden him with too many requests?
