Difficult to tell how close they really got, but heading up a bit and getting the kite filling would have helped rather than bearing off, slowing down and flapping the kite...

Streuth cobber that's no near miss. Yer should be on the harbour on a normal Saturday afternoon - About 12 different sailing courses, 30 different fleets, including 12 16 and 18 foot skiffs, around 400 yachts racing, throw in a few dozen cruising, any number of stink boats, around a dozen harbour ferries and another dozen tripper boats, plus maybe a seaplane! Sure gets interesting at times. I tried to find a suitable photo, but none did the scene justice.
