SWMBO is complaining that I keep buying stuff from Ebay. I keep telling her it is only for the boat so its all right,/forums/images/icons/smile.gif but she doesnt seem to agree. Mind you she may have a point cause I just spent nearly £1k (new radar etc) so I had better ease off for a while.!

Isn't it an invariability of most half boat sailors to lose a keel at some stage anyway!

Which RADAR have you bought, is it new? I have never spent more than £100 on ebay, after that I start worrying about being ripped off, although I guess as price goes up you can pick it up from most of UK without feeling too bad. I bought a nice cd changer for the car, that was the most I spent. Though did sell a camera for £250, but I trust me!

bought a Furuno 1623 (i.e. 15" aerial version) for £870. It is brand new and never been out of the box, and is being sold on behalf of the owner by the Furuno agent with the full warranty. I bought my 30 ST winches earlier this year, and a number of other items. I use paypal for the additional security, and keep a good eye on the price versus new (seen lots that have exceeded new price). IMHO it is like any auction, decide what you want to pay and check the reports on the seller, and then go for it up to your previously decided limit. Interesting section on Ebay on BBC just now warning of the possible pitfalls, and showing a woman there who had spent abt £1100 on bits, which were valued at less than £100 in total.

BTW I always ignore the riposts abt spare hulls, it just shows how jealous they are, /forums/images/icons/smile.gif I mean who wants to sail a boat along at 30-40 degrees! Most of these AWBs have berths for approx 6 people and space in the cockpit for abt 3. Me I have berths for 7 (although if really pushed could find space for another 2, and have had 13 people in my cockpit (and cooked a BBQ for that number) and for a short period had another 10 people on the focsle - all in a 29 ft boat!

It wasn't you sold me the Minolta was it? If it was thanks - it's excellent! I've bought loads of good gear on e-bay at well below swindlery prices, using Paypal for safety and speed, and had no trouble at all. I've also got good money for stuff no longer needed by me that I would otherwise have given away. I love it!

Congratulations - guess we were bidding on the same radar (I'm yanitasailing on eBay).
I only bid on new (or ex-demo) stuff when it comes to electronics. I agree, the prices are sometimes silly.
I always check the lowest possible price for a particular item; and as I can recover VAT, I deduct that. So my highest bid will in most cases be lower than yours.

Idea: maybe we should start an eBay syndicate type thing -> who wants what, and how urgently do you need it & try to avoid bidding against eachother.

Commiserations, at least I was not the one to overbid you! I had considered buying a new JRC 1500 from the states, but thought that this price was a reasonable alternative. Mind you , was very close to my top bid.

My accountant wont let me put any of the boat bills against the business (including VAT) so presume your boat is a part of your business?

I like the idea of the ebay forum, but dont think it will work!

Yanita's Gib registered. I charter her out to myself. Surprised not more people are doing it. Only caveat: I have to "leave" the EU every 18 months. A trip to the CI takes care of that.

Just did a quick search and that same radar is about £660 in the States. I reckon next time we go we'll bring one back each (as presents of course) and the profit should pay the air fares.

Yanita. How do you claim the VAT back? Is it based on the goods being bought for 'export' to your foreign regd. boat? Does anyone actually check that you leave the EU?

eBay is a minefield...

I've bought some cheap stuff on eBay, but lots of people seem unaware of "real world" prices (including on other parts of eBay!). Earlier this year, I had a good run of buying items in bulk on eBay for average $3 each and selling them again on eBay for average £15 each. Madness!
