Newbie walking!

I have a Sealine 240 senator and mean to attach it to a swinging mooring next season. It has a windlass up front allowing the cable and anchor to drop through the fwd edge of the bow via a factory recess.
I have been told by the surveyor NOT to use the windlass as an anchor point if I was to bring the mooring warp up through the recess.
I don't want to rig a bridle across the bow between the port/stbd cleats. There is no bow roller or samson post either. What is the best way of attaching to a swinging mooring for thw whole of next season?

Grateful.

Whats up with the bridle idea. If it was me. I'd just hook rope round cleat and through fair lead. Probably do same from other cleat for safety. But then I can trust the cleats.

Hiya Max,
welcome to the forum. I've been on a swinging mooring on the tidal Thames at Thurrock for quite a few years now with various boats, the latest one being a Regal which sounds as if it has the same configuration at the bow as yours.. Sometimes the current flows up to five knots on a spring tide ebb where I am so I have to be pretty careful, if not over the top with my mooring strops.
The surveyor has given you good advice.
The way I do it is to have a soft plastic or rubber pipe over the main strop, this strop hooks over one of the cleats either side of the windlass. These cleats are more than strong enough to hold my boat, even in the strong current. I also have a back up strop which hooks onto the other unused cleat, but is slacker than the main strop, just in case the main strop parts. The rubber or plastic pipe stops any damage to the boat from the strop, it also prevents the strop from chafing through.
Hope this helps. Enjoy the forum, I'm sure you'll find it a good laugh and get the occasional good advice once you get to know all the loonies.

Cheers now

Syd

I can't get out of the jacket, I'm using my nose to type and it's running all over the keyboard making it sticky plus it's beginning to get sore.

Re: Swinging mooring + winter gales= no boat

had same problem with 23 ft regal.the boat was lying in fairly sheltered tidal waters.
Was told in no uncertain terms that a decent winter blow would rip the toy cleats clean out of the cabin roof.
Fixed decent cleat in roof with large heavy block of teak both sides of roof. Inside cabin all varnished and polished it looked fairly presentable.

Just hold tight dear it will not be so rough when we get round the corner, trust me.

Syd,
thank you for your advice, gratefully received and one of the more sensible of the responses!
Can I take it one stage further:

Isn't there an arrangement where I can attach some kind of post/cleat/ring,
where the mooring line comes in through the recess in the hull (whatever
that is called) and can be attached to this permanent position. This would
prevent any damage from scrubbing over the hull with a bridle? What is the
purpose of a bow roller etc?

Yours ,
Wayne

Wayne,
Can't picture what you meen. Do you meen a ring bolted through the very point of the bow like you see on Bayliners, small Birchwoods etc?
These are strong but I wouldn't trust just two bolts holding the boat.
I think I know what you meen about the recess hole, is this where the anchor drops through? I believe the bow roller is soley for the anchor chain to run up and down when in use.
With the windlass smack bang in the middle of everything its a bit awkward to add an extra transom post that won't obstruct or drag the mooring line over anything else. Could you get a picture of your bow we could have a look at ? It would make it easier to help you out.
Like I say, I have a Regal 320 which goes about six and a half tons fully laden(which it is, believe me), and I have had no probs with the pipe over the strop attached to the forrard cleat scenario.
Cheers for now.

Syd :)

Re: Swinging mooring + winter gales= no boat

We dont usually have the problem of gales because its a summer only mooring (may to end september) and easterly gales here are very rare. Boat goes to gorey harbour when the wind is predicted to pick up
