I am on my mooring and note that some of my neighbours hoik the mooring buoy right up to the bow roller. I have a 1.5m chain strop in a plastic tube and leave the buoy at water level but as I have a bow sprit and bobstay suffer a bit from the strop fouling the bob stay in some conditions. Any advantage in hoiking the buoy up do you reckon?

Stops the buoy bashing against the topsides.

I don't think pulling the buoy up will help keep your bobstay clear, as it will just hit the chain below the buoy instead. Is your bobstay fixed, or does it have a tackle in it? In Kindred Spirit we had the latter, and when on a mooring or at anchor I would always slack off the bobstay and trice it up out of the way.

Although I have no experience of this, I recall it mentioned in a previous thread some time ago that it was to prevent the mooring buoys from rubbing the gel coat. Hope this helps, I'm sure someone will be along soon to explain the mechanics of it.

PRV beat me to it, must learn to type faster!

If it is possible to prevent the buoy from graunching against the hull along with an assorted mix of seagull carp, sand mud etc forming a fairly effective grinding paste between the buoy and the hull, to the detriment of the gel coat.

Equally a boat lying to a pennant can become tide and wind rode, with the pennant chain also graunching the hull, in certain conditions. A boat on a swinging mooring that is at all exposed will almost certainly suffer one way or the other.

Also, in strong winds, I found having the buoy pulled up close gave a better motion.
My mooring at the time was quite exposed to certain wind direction, and also had some current across it.
So a bit choppy at times.
Some boats could have quite a rough motion on their moorings nearby, as they lurched forwards then came up short against the chain.
Other things may work better with other circumstances.
