Captain Cockcroft's book on the Ship's Compass is worth borrowing from a library as it is very detailed about the whole theory. You can then do it yourself. Note the position of the magnets and soft iron correctors before you start and if it all goes wrong you can set it back to the beginning and start again. Note, soft iron whatsits, or Kelvin's Balls are used in steel vessel, so don't worry if you are wood or GRP and think you have lost your balls. You never would have had them in the first place:-)
