Hello all,

I am heading off for our summer holidays from the Medway over to Suffolk and the delights of the east coast, and as ever, to catch the ebb out of the Medway, I end up hitting the Swin Spitway at bang on low water. I draw 1.5 meters and my tide table shows me there should be another 1 meter over the chart datum (which shows around 1.5 meters at LAT over the Spitway)... so I should be okay and have a clear 1 meter under the keel if I arrive at the very worst time.

Anyone been over there recently at low tide...?

Ta,

Mark

I crossed the Spitway at low water on the 6th July en-route from the Orwell to North Fambridge. From memory I saw a least depth of 2.5m.

Rather than following the line between the Wallet and Swin Spitway buoys I usually run due North/South from/to the Swin Spitway buoy as this tends to save some distance run and there appears to be more depth along this line.

There is a usefull chartlet of the spitway on the Crossing the Thames Estuary website.

We came across on Tuesday of last week at around low water.
We draw around 1.8m and had around 0.8m under the keel. It was flat calm. I am not sure I would have been so happy about it if there had been a bit of chop!!
Like Simon14b, we generally take the route from a fair bit east of the Wallet Spitway bouy to a point a little West of the Swin Spitway bouy.
There is a chartlet from last year on the most excellent Crossing the Thames Estuary website - a backup to the similarly named book -

Went through on July 1st at LW 2 metres showing under the one meter keel of the delivery boat we were on (cant vouch for its accuracy) . Took the direct line between the 2 safe water buoys.
