Yes it can but you've got to have the relevent pieces of paper and authority. Not use user defined setting its got to go back to the sevice people to be enabled.

All marine radios are capable of Tx/Rx on this frequency, but none sold with Channel O programmed in.
Not sure if this a legal thing or just a protocol followed by all manufacturers.

Channel 00 is one of the expansion channels. On the swiftech the is a capability to expand the channel choice by an extra 15 channels.
You've got to post or fax a copy of the authorization certificate to SL, or Silva as it is now, in scotland. Apparently its easy to get the channels tho I suppose not as easy to get the authorization. I suspect the extra 15 channels are are to do with the forces/customs/police etc etc

Most modern sets will allow the programming of a number of "private channels" CH0 is one of these.

All dealers should ask to see written proof that you are allowed to have access to this channel.

If not both you and the dealer are liable for prosecution under the WT act.

HMGC and RNLI get very twitchy about non authorised people using or listening to their private channels.

As stated Silva now look after the Swiftech kit.

I used to have a VHF with 00 channel years ago, it came off a ship.
The great part was it used to pick up the deck loop radio on navy ships.
We had a very entertaining afternoon one summer sitting in Kingswear watching a Leander Class frigate trying to more to a bouy in the river.
Everything looked very smooth and under control whereas in actual fact when you can hear them talking to each other it`s organised chaos and very funny.

If I remember we could listen but couldn’t transmit.

I believe that ch0 is a coastguard working frequency and RNLI/Rescue Helos and the like have permission to us it. To legally have the channel you have to have written permission from The Chief Coastguard. He will not give permission to anyone who is not directly associated with search and rescue.

failing getting a replacement, there are many non DSC set going begging.
if you can get an Icom you will find it a much better radio than that you have.
the Swiftech was a bottom end budget radio

Channel 0

I bought a Hand held Scanner from Maplins a few years ago for about £80, looks just like a handheld VHF, but it can pick any frequency you like. I have programmed mine with all the Marine channels. including 0.

Used to be able to listen the Police, but the new digital sets they use cannot be heard.

The aircraft traffic can be interesting.

Bit of an odd thing to post in a public forum.

"Auxilliary coastguards" haven't existed for years - our shorebased teams are Coast Rescue Officers. The old "auxilliaries afloat" went even longer ago.

Ch0 is a private channel, use of which is restricted to declared SAR assets at the discretion of HMCG. It's use, for either transmission or receipt, is prevented by the appropriate radio regulations. The same goes for Ch00, which is solely for CG use (i.e. not fitted to non CG assets).
