I've asked lots of questions on here and the response has always been fantastic. I now have the most difficult question I have ever asked!
We are in the ostergotland archipelago. We've read that the Swedish people celebrate the longest day on Saturday 23rd June this year. We would like to find a good place to visit for the celebration. Any suggestions? I'm sure this will be a step too far!

Sorry. Not my area. The last Swedish solstice we had was in SudKoster, miles away. It was actually a bit twee, with a 'maypole' and lots of children. Luckily we had some Norwegians for company and to share drinks with.

Walking on some of the islands, we've seen a number of what I believe are Maypoles, I've told the skipper that the Swedes dance naked around them at midsummer! She says she is totally against dancing!
I think we may be heading for Norrkoping unless we hear of anywhere better.

Just in case anyone can help, we've revised our plans a little. The weather, which has been stunning, is changing so we are going north towards the south end of the Sodertalje canal. That should give us somewhere to run to if the weather is not good.

Please note that the big party generally is on Midsummer's Eve, that is on June 22nd this year.
Not very familiar with the area, so I have no suggestion at hand.

Edit: Found this at Tullgarn Palace, which is situated by the coast outside Vagnhärad. Might be of interest.

Mt stepdaughter has Swedish cousins. Crayfish parties are a big thing (she holds one in St Albans) with liberal amounts of alcohol and singing. Find one.

By tradition crayfish parties are not until August. The other two are on already at Midsummer, though...

That's a pain! We had planned to go to Trosa tomorrow but have found there is not enough depth for us! We're now going to Nynashamn. We'll look for celebrations up there. I've already shaved my head in preparation for the weekend!

Hi

Exactly where i Östergötland are you now? I have my boat in Loftahammar and have spent many summers in this archipelago. What kind of midsummer do you want? Alone in a quiet bay, party in a town or maybe do you want to see some traditional?
The weather looks like its not going to be sunny. There is something strange about midsummer. We had almost 4 weeks of sun and as usual, the weather changes.

Kind Regards
Per

As said above, we're in Nynashamn and took a train to Stockholm today. Tomorrow we're heading to Uto maybe with a stop at an island on the way.

It's going to be Utö. We arrived today, just ahead of the rush. Lots of young people enjoying themselves tonight. Many of the houses are decorated with branches and leaves.
Tomorrow at one the pole is decorated and at two the dancing starts!
