Living in Norway, Sweden (west coast) is one of the most popular places to visit by boat. Within our family.

Usually fine breezes, well protected sailing areas, warm sunny weather and long, bright evenings.

Simply can`t wait......

How long are you thinking of going for? If its a short trip then its very nice just north of Gothenberg, there is a group of islands the largest is called Ørust where Halborg Rassey and Sweden Yachts have their yards. If you have several weeks then you can sail through the Gota canal, you go inland at G,berg or just north up the North Elv and up through the two large inland lakes Vannern and Vattern and across country coming out south of Stockholm, you can then go north to the S.holm Archipeligo or south and round the bottom of Sweden. It is a sailors paradise with lots of places to visit, the summers are very good and they all speak english. Be sure to fly the ensign and you will make many friends.

Steve from Norway.

thank you for your reaction. Is there a way to send a personal reply too, I don't know how?
We are going for 3 weeks with our Fairline 33 Targa (2 x 200hp).
I heard its great in the area of Stockholm and the weather there is ok.
How many days will it take us to go from GOteborg to Stockholm? Because that trip sounds great too. If that takes to long maybe it's better to go to Stockholm directly via Kalmar / Sund, I don't know, is that wise you think?

kind regards,
Dan

It´s about 600 nm round the coast. If you intend to go back, go along the coast up to Stockholm and the Gota Canal back later in season. Swedes mostly have their holidays in July.
From the north part of Kalmar Sund you´ll have sheltered inshore water all the way up to Stockholm, so you should be able to go regardless of wind.
Need info about Stockholm and the Baltic sea, please ask.

Hi Dan It will take you about a week to cruise through Sweden from one end of the canal to the other, this is taking it easy as there is plenty to see, I would also allow some time for the archipeligo near Stockholm as its beautiful there.

You may fly cheap with RyanAir from London to east Norway, and the city of Sandefjord. You may rent a boat if you wish. From Sandefjord it is 4 to 8 hours sailing to Sweden (30 nm) and nearest town Strømstad. Or a fantastic archipelago, Koster (www.kosteroarna.com/se), with many islands and several natural harbours.

20 degrees in the clear salt water. Practically no tides or currents. Long warm summer nights. Grills, happy children. Sandy beaches. Green playgrounds.

And you may sail to Gothenburg in well sheltered water in a couple of days. If in a hurry. There you will find Liseberg, a spectacular (within our standard) Tivoli.

Between Strømstad and Gothenburg you will find hundreds of small islands to achor at. Many small cities to shop in. And welcoming scandinavians everywhere.

Have a nice summer!

In June 1995 I drove from Darthmouth to Helsinki in a Fairline Targa 33 I bought then. - Great trip! Via the Kiel canal and the Baltic Sea. - You should be aware of that the Gota canal is nicknamed (freely translated): "The Divorce Ditch"!

I have done it ..

both ways.

It is easiest (in a sail boat) to go westward in the canal system, there is a strong current in the river down to Gothenburg.

The trip round the south i not difficult and it give you the chance to visit Bornholm and Christianso, as well a Kalmar.

The archipelagoes (N from kalmar and the vast Stockholm archipelago) are beautiful and deserve a long cruise.

Do visit the Aland Islands, very friendly, lovely and the weather is great.

My wife and I took 8 days to go from Aarhus to Stockholm and that was too quick. We took 10 days from Stockholm to Gothenburg, that was forced on us as the canal insisted we travel in convoy (out of season).

PM or e-mail me if you want more.

Just a few words of warning.
The coastline bothe east and west is extraordinarily beautiful but also extremely complex. At times we've had three on watch; oone steers, the next does the chartwork and the third spots the next buoy but 3.
This was in a slow sailing boat. Your problems will be greater. In addition the granite rocks are very hard and stick straight up; you get no warning on the echo sounder.

Its just a case of being .

quick and accurate at navigation.

It is well worth the visit and the weather is great (May, June and July anyway).

The Swedes and Finns are great, the latter with a very good sense of humour.
