I sailed a 38 which was 1989-1990 for a few thousand miles.

I also supervised some maintenance work on the same boat later in it's life.

Nothing stands out as a problem apart from the usual age related issues which I saw on the re -fit. Corroded base plate under mast, leaking toe rail (but this one had had a bump) this can easily get to the electrics behind the chart table. The cables from the wheel steering go over pulleys at the base of the pedestal, one of these fractured, the emergency steering was totally inadequate, I would beef this up for a long passage, and regularly check the pulleys and castings.

This boat had also suffered some keel damage early in its life and the hull ribs had been repaired/strengthened, at the time it was reported another 38 had had a keel issue, but I never found out any details. The very thin aft fixing area of the keel meant that a heavy grounding pushed the aft end up and lifted some ribs. After seeing this I would look closely at keel fixings and hull reinforcing ribs for any signs of cracking.

Nice boats, maybe a little over priced in my view.

Sailed one some years ago - very nice, good seaboat.

As to price - they are a little overpriced (all Swedish boats are), but in the current climate I'm sure a deal can be done.

Talking overpriced - anyone looked at asking prices for a Contessa 32 recently? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Yes, and asking prices is just what they may remain, some of those boats have been around for 12 months, and more.
I know of two that have sold recently, one very late and very well equipped boat for the region of 28k and an early boat, in nice original condition asking 18k. Those look like your limits, unless you are looking for a 1990's or later boat.

Swedish Blonde was owned by a couple I know who moved to Spain and sold the boat presumably to the guy you're talking about. I don't know the details but the boat had a keel problem which took a lot of time and money to sort out. Interior of the boat was classy and what you would expect, though I found the cockpit a bit shallow for my taste. It seemed to sail very well though.

I suspect the same 50% applies to a lot of boats. When I was after a Prout cat, and having a pile of old mags under the bed, I spent a fruitfull day or two phoning everyone who had advertised a boat in the previous 5 years to see if they had sold and if so, for what. Bit cheeky I know but most people were very helpful. Less than 50% had sole and as you might expect, it was almost all the 50% with the lower asking price. One guy with a self build Snowgoose down in Coirnwall somewhere had had his boat for sale for 5 years and had done nothing but raise the price a bit every year. When I went to look at it, it had headlinings hanging down in folds and every surface was wet. He couldnt understand why it hadnt sold.

Presume you will have found the Sweden Yachts web site that has details of all SY from original 34 onwards? If not, then here is the link to the 36:
Sweden Yacht 36

I am lucky enough to crew reqularly on a SY 390 and it is one of the best boats I've sailed - good compromise between speed and sea-kindly motion. I would expect the 36 to have similar sailing qualities.

I am the very happy owner of a Sweden Yachts 390. A dream boat. Keel problems on SY is a rumour that I have not been able to confirm. All the ones I have been able to follow up have been either untrue, or the result of groundings and improper repair.

If you want to get in contact with Sweden Yacht owners, there is an open group on 'Facebook' that you can check out. It is called 'Sweden Yacht Owners'.

SY keel problems are not a myth, can't say more than that I know the Lawyer who acted for a very unhappy owner, recommend you have it checked carefully.
Otherwise very nice boats.

Yeah - We went to see a 340 in Lymington a month or two ago.... Nice boat. Messy looking repairs to keel, which is what scared us off that one.

OK, So those who say theirs a keel problem, can they please enlighten me,, !!!

Only heard of the one, in mid Atlantic, that had been grounded in the med somewhere,

Geoff, I own a 370, Bough used when 4 years old, and no problem whatsoever, bar normally maintenance and updating, Not many for sale, as not a mass produced make, and owners do tend to keep hold of them,, I was looking for about 12 months, and been a pleasure ever since

Re being overpriced,, compared to what,?? They are dearer than your average AWB, but then far better built , hence costing twice the price when new !! You get what you pay for !!

Where about are you Geoff, more then welcome to come and have a look & chat
