By way of background, I'm a complete newbie to sailing (some Dinghy fun and a floatilla holiday) but with a desire to learn and get out sailing and exploring the UK coast.

My background is hang gliding and paragliding. I've figured I can apply much of the same theory that I already know to sailing if I twist mentailly through 90' - with the benefit that I'm not going to die (at least not immediately) if I fall :)

But I digress. As I'm taking a brief break from my Day Skipper theory work and thinking about the type of sailing I'd like to be doing - weekend sailing up and down the Solent (yes - I know - but I live darn Sarf) in a shallow draft bilge keeler.

So here's the thing. I understand that in the Summer months marinas and visitor moorings can be in short supply. For someone like me, who will have enough on to worry about with the sailing and navigation, it would be great to have a number of options available for a safe place to stop at the end of the day.

Let's say I have a semi-tidal mooring at Club X, and want to escape for the weekend, wouldn't it make sense for me to offer up my place on a website for anyone who might need it? Similarly, they will have offered up their place for someone else to use and so on, and so in theory I would have options for the general area I'm heading for.

I understand that for Marinas, many (all?) have a system where if you let them know you'll be off, they'll make your place available for someone else and knock something off your normal bill.

In the club scene though, is there an equivalent to what I've described?

In summary I'm thinking of a (free to use) website that can provide a source of temporary places to stay for yotties around the UK.

Any thoughts? Am I missing something?

Mike
