Berth holders in Swansea Marina have been advised that the red diesel supply in the marina has changed and the diesel now contains FAME or Bio Diesel.
I have a ten year old MD22P engine, should I be worried about this and should I be doing anything about it?

If it helps Force 4 outlet is also available in Swansea Marine Group premises at Swansea marina as well as Cardiff.

Yes, Paul was telling me that you plan to build up your chandlery stock in Swansea and you can get anything in the F4 catalogue delivered. It's about time we had a good chandlery service in Swansea Marina.......I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Yep. That's right. Anything in Cardiff or the catalogue will be quickly delivered to Swansea if it is not alrady in stock. In parallel the store is trying to have as much stock available in store anyway so any ideas you have for the team in Swansea will be welcome.

That should save me a lot of drives to Cardiff.

But back to my thread (and to placate Madhatter), is there a greater risk of diesel bug with FAME diesel? I haven't had any signs of diesel bug in the past and is this the only thing to consider or should any additives be used to protect/assist older engines to run on this fuel. I assume not but am I missing something especially as I'm about to spend money on getting the engine sorted out?

As I understand it a reduction in shelf life, and an increase in diesel bug occurrences are the main issues with the new 7% biodiesel. Therefore, and especially after my recent problems, I intend to continue with maintenance doses of additive, which apparently helps with both these issues.

Madhatter's link seems little more pro-bio than most of the other articles I've seen - though I do sometimes think the magazines like to create something to write about! A precautionary additive is still the way I’m going.

I also therefore considered my original post to be on topic!

As I understand it, the 7% FAME increases the risk of bug contamination if there is also water present in the tank. So as well as avoiding FAME fuel if possible (and some S.Coast marinas such as MDL have stated they will NOT be introducing it) the message is try to keep water out of your tank (easier said than done!). Fuel additives may the way to go. A recent RYA article explained it all http://www.rya.org.uk/cruising/current-issues/pages/low-sulphurfuelnowbeingsupplied.aspx
