If it is the story involving the dog I think your actions have been spot on.
First of all from a human perspective - although I do hope this shout was at no risk to yourselves - it portrays you all in a good light and this kind of story somehow makes everyone feel a bit better about themselves.
Secondly as you say by rescuing the dog safely you may very well have prevented someone else dealing with it less professionally thereby creating a bigger problem or even a tragedy in the end.
What kind of dog was it? If it was a manky old cur probably best to have left it to the seagulls . Howver if a cuddly wee pooch then you can probably sell it.
In the dim past when I was RNLI crew (Atlantic 21), we were on exercise and watched a cow happily walk off a 120ft cliff. Big splash! We "shepherded" it ashore as it seemed to be swimming OK but the vet put it down.
That's dreadful , a cow with enough sense of adventure to go cliff diving and it gets put down. Absolutely dreadful! Especially as it must have really made a big effort to climb up there in the first place!!!
And I was told of a yottie landing on Inchkieth (Firth of Forth) whereapon a lovely friendly alsation came down to the quay. After a while it was realised that the dog was alone. The CG were informed that the dog was to be taken ashore and into care of the yotties.
