Swan Upping delayed by river conditions

Swan Upping will not now start until Tuesday 17th July and from Eton instead of Sunbury
The River Thames is in flood and Swan Upping will not commence until Tuesday 17th July 2012 at Eton Bridge at 9.00 am.

At the present time, the remainder of the week will follow our published schedule. However, the situation remains subject to change dependent on weather and river conditions throughout the week.

Anybody told the swans??

A lovely event to watch - the parading part that is (republicans, sceptics and folks who object to others dressing up in "silly" uniforms - stay away)

Will Gloriana be there, I wonder?

Gets more enjoyable towards the end of the upping as the crews get progressivly more inebriated.:)

We wanted to be on the river so the kids could experience seeing this and follow them up. Boat out of the water till next week now, so may have to walk if the weather allows.

From Eton, how far do they go in one day?

Some smartie pants will now come in a say minus 4 miles a day or something like that due to the river flow... LOL

The Swans must be relieved they have got a reprieve this from being worried by a bunch of garishly dressed inebriates:D

Yeah,but....... the ones that need help because they are sick, injured or have fishing gear attached to them won't get the help they need! The principal task has changed from purely marking the swans to looking after the welfare of the swans and giving them the help or treatment they need.

A once a year visit in fancy dress ain't going to help too many distressed swans.
Our first port of call with distressed swans is the swan sanctuary next to Shepperton Marina available all year for call outs - Emergency No. 01932 240790. Worth keeping the number in ones phone.

That's good to know.
OK the dressing up and procession is fun to watch (optional) and looking at the pics: it appears that a lot of good work is being done by folks not dressed up!

That's fine if you come across a distressed swan.
However I'm assume that a general sweep as the procedure implies would capture (in the general meaning of the word) birds not generally seen.

Could be wrong, but always believe that behind all the ceremonies lurks some real valuable work.

Anyone challenge me with substantial info: ?
