Are Sta-Lok and Norseman cones interchangeable?
Probably not! so does anyone know how to identify one from the other?

They are definitely not the same, they have a different taper, and the taper at the thick end is much steeper on a Norseman which also has a flat on the end where the inner strand of wire comes out. I would be very sceptical of the wisdom of substituting one for the other.

Sta Lok

I don't want to substitute, I just want to get the correct ones.

So Noresman may be shorter with a steeper taper, that's a good start :)

Sta Lok cones are smooth with no ridge, Norseman cones have a ridge on the widest part. Sta Lok cones can not be used with Norseman terminals. Also Sta Lok cones comes with a former, I believe Norseman do not. Hope this helps.

I have one of each in front of me, I tried a photo but it was not very clear.
The Norseman is 16mm long and the Sta-lock 27mm. The Noresman does indeed have a steeper taper though I can't see the flat refered to above.
Answer not interchangeable but you can make a Noresman from a Stay-lock if you are desperate, have a good eye and the job is not safety critical!!
I did price Noresman for 6mm and they were much less than Vics £14, no I can't recall where from! must find out so I can replace the dodgy repair I made with the Stay-lock!!

Not interchangable in the sense that the inner norseman cone does not suit the Sta-lok outer casing. What is it you are trying to achieve ?

One of them has a cup shaped thingy as well as a cone. Cant remember which.

Normal Sta-Lok fittings have the cup.

However be careful. My roller-furler is designed for Sta-Lok, but is clearly machined for use WITHOUT a cup. (if you tried to use one it would not seat; would collapse when tightened; and there would be insufficient engagement of the fitting.)

Thanks for the measurements pcatterall
orion50 - I am shortening my Back Stays, the bottle screws are fully adjusted but the Back Stays are still a bit slack hence the Fore Stay is a bit slack. Tightening the Fore Stay is difficult with the Profurl furler and it would pull the mast too far forward.
KellysEye - I Googled cones but didn't think of trying pictures

Old norsemans

I would like to point out that norseman changed their design some years ago and if the norseman has a locking nut on it you will (almost) certainly not be able to find a cone for it. I presume the furling gear mentioned earlier was a furlex, and should definitely have a former, if it doesn't fit you have done something wrong (often they get stuck up in bottom end and you don't notice they are there and try to put in a second).

I assume you are referring to my post. No it's a GOIOT from the early 80s when they were an independent company .... long before being bought by Plastimo.
