Planning to take the boat to ireland this summer - the SW corner, but because of work committments need to leave the boat there for 1 week. Does anyone have experience of leaving a boat in Ireland - either the marina in bantry bay (behind bear island) or at kinsale??
any comments on taxis from these marinas to Cork airport also welcome

You might also consider Crosshaven...may be more options there, and closer to Cork.

Don't think you'll have any problem leaving your boat at either location.

In Kinsale, you'll probably have to use Castlepark Marina, on the starboard side coming in. Taxi to Cork Airport no problem here.

Lawrence Cove Marina on Bear Island is in a beautiful location but transport will be a problem. a; you've got to get to the mainland on the ferry first and then b; you're a very long distance from Cork Airport.

Have you considered East Ferry Marina on Great Island, Cork Harbour, or Crosshaven?

thanks - the "plan" was to get as far west if possible - i.e. bantry bay, leavce the boat for 1 week and then return and sail back

Another option if you want to get as far west as possible (but it may be pushing it) is the new Caherciveen Marina (behind Valentia Island) in Kerry. You could then travel to Kerry airport and fly back Ryanair. (If you like Ryanair)

I can echo the advice above, and would suggest the following:
In Crosshaven, try Salve Marina, cheaper than Royal Cork Yacht Club, with easy public transport to Cork Airport.

Further west, in Bere Island Marina is lovely and Philomena Harrington will mind your boat, but, as mentioned above, needs ferry to mainland and bus to Cork.

West Cork Sailing may be able to offer you a mooring at Adrigole, a small bit north of Bere Island, on the mainland.

In each case, tell them "Bob from Glenans sent you." May, or may not, prove helpfiul.
