I am thinking of purchasing a new Suzuki outboard (approx 2 hp) and would welcome any users experience of this unit and any potential problems to look out for.

I bought a DT2.2 about 5 years ago and have had no problems. The only criticisms are the lack of a lifting handle (the tiller folded back doubles up - but isn't ideal) and starting in gear (no neutral or clutch). This does make it lightweight & simple though. Seems reasonably quiet too.
Just remembered that there are many irritating loose screws to remove (lose) to get the cowling off - but you can get to the spark plug through a hinged hatch & drain fuel/adjust carb with it in place. Chances are it will only come off for servicing, so not a big problem.

Ref "Lack of lifting handle"---On my DT2.2 I'v replaced the 4 cowling fixing screws on the side with bolts and back nuts . I made up light webbing straps to criss cross over the cowling and with "penny" washers thro' bolted to the cowling. Its now so easy to lift and carry. Very reliable engine though!!

My DT2.2 is now a couple of years old and have had no problem with it. Local outboard supplier's mechanic recommends them above the tohatsu/mercury/mariner/call it what you will (and they sell mariner/suzi/honda).
Yamaha is supposed to be good as well but warranty conditions demand that it's serviced every 15 minutes - not a problem if you subscribe to the 'you can buy a new one every 3-4 years for the main agent servicing costs' school of thought.

My "Suzi" DT2 is over 15 years old and apart from the occasional service and a bit of paint touch-up, it just goes on demand. It also has a proper metal prop instead of the now common plastic offerings. If the prop gets damaged hitting the bottom it only needs a little filing and a piant touch-up rather than being replaced.

I've a 2hp Suzuki around 10 years old, I service it once a year and spray winterising stuff into it for the winter. Every spring it starts no bother. A totally reliable bit of kit, if I lost it I'd buy another no hesitation.

Thank you to all who replied. Comments suggest this to be a reliable unit and I think I shall be tempted to go down this avenue.
Thanks again.
