Hello to everyone,
I have a suzuki 2.2 2-stroke outboard which has started to give me some problems. Basically the thing starts on the first pull and runs fine but will only do so on tickover for around 1 minute and on the throttle about 30 seconds. After this time the engine stalls. After leaving the stalled engine to sit for around 5 seconds, it will then start again on the first pull. Very frustrating!! I've had the carb to pieces and cleaned everything including the float chamber. I think it's something to do with the float not filling with fuel hence the reason it stops and then will start after being left. Does anyone have any experience of this or some guidance on what I could do next with my fault finding?
Thanks,
Barney

It sounds like a classic case of tank vent not open or blocked although the times are a bit short

Is this an integral tank or a remote tank.

Assuming that is an integral one also check the filter and the tap and ensure that you get a good flow of fuel to the carb. Did you check the float operated needle valve, it could be obstructed or not opening properly

I have the same engine and last year it gave similar symptoms but it would run for slightly longer than yours. I assumed a fuel/carburettor problem and cleaned everything I could get to. Eventually it was cured by fitting another spark plug even though the existing plug was very new and in apparently good condition. The Suzuki agent even gave me two plugs because they can fail on these engines very easily.

Another problem I had was that the outboard is tilted when on my dinghy transom (even at maximum adjustment) and cuts out when the tank is half empty as the fuel exit from the tank becomes uncovered.

If the fuel flow is OK do as Dipper suggests and replace the plug. That's always a good move with a troublesome engine. If the trouble persists you then need to start looking at the ignition system. Presumably its electronic not coil and points. It could be cutting out when it warms up a little then cutting in again when it cools.

Try and check the spark for starters. Check the Ht lead etc and other electrical connections.

It'll be difficult to pin point an ignition problem. Substitution of Ht coil and Cd unit is about all that you can do I think although a manual might detail some checks.

If you eliminate fuel as the problem, which it is 99% of the time, and a new spark plug doesn't help, as VicS suggests it's possibly the PEI (Pointless Electronic Ignition) unit . They are a sealed unit and cannot be tested easily. The only solution is to substitute it for a new one. they are not too dear - around £30-£40. It just unbolts and the replacement bolts straight on again - there is no timing to set up but use a thin-ish feeler gauge when refitting it to maintain a small clearance between the unit and the flywheel.

check fuel flow by removing the drain screw on carb bowl. open vent and tap and you should have a good old dribble. sound like it could be the filter in the fuel tap (if you remove it dont break the securing band as the tap is about 35 quids

I have a similar problem with the same engine at the moment. Fires up, runs for about 15 - 30 seconds and then stops. Won't then re-start for a good long while until it reaches ambient temperature again. Then the cycle repeats. Don't think it's fuel or plug.

I had a very similar problem with a 4hp 2 stroke Suzuki last year. Eventually cured it when I noticed a little staining/gunk around the inlet to the float chamber. I reground the needle valve & its seating with some Brasso. Been going better than ever since then.

Thanks for the replies. Interesting to note that blackfish has the same issue. I've ordered a couple of new sparkplugs. I have noticed that the washer is crushed on the current one I have and there is slight burning on one side. I'll also try the brasso trick. I'll let you know what happens when the new plug arrives.

Well I never would have though it would have been the spark plug in a million years. I took a new crush washer from another plug and put it onto the existing one. The engine started on the first pull and has continued to run without issue under tick over and full throttle in the test tank. My thanks go to everyone who has contributed. Barney
