Suzuki Outboard 12hp Serial Number?

I know I have a strange question, but can anyone give me an idea about the letters and the numbers and how they are put in the serial number of a Suzuki Outboard with 12 HP (sorry do not know the exact medel). It is a 2 stroke engine produced around 1989 - 95 (maybe).

I understand that with Suzuki the first number of the second grouping is the year.
ie. if it starts with an 8---- then the manufacturing year ends in an 8 and therefore would be either 1988 or 1998. You guess to the nearest 10 years; shouldn't be a problem.
