My very old, until now very reliable D2 has decided to start as usual with one or two pulls but now to stop after 6 seconds. It matters not what throttle setting, 6 seconds is all it gives.
Taking out the carberator float chamber drain screw shows that fuel flows continuously from the tank.
I have cleaned the whole fuel system.
I can find no fault with the ignition system.
Still it will only run for 6 seconds. It will restart only after a rest of 3 minutes.
Advice please. Thanks in advance.

Water in the fuel.
Throw away the batch and get fresh fuel.
Happened me last year with the same engine.
Thanks. I tried some somewhat newer fuel (six months old) but with no change. I will try straight from the pump as soon as I can find one

Actually checked that you can draw a good spark of several mm length from the plug lead ? Not just across the plug electrodes.

Tried a new plug ?

Carb flooding ?

Clean the carb again.

The other thing but prob a long shot is that your choke linkage is disconnected and the motor is stuck in choke.
worth checking but its pretty basic not exactly any "linkage" involved

Spark ok at plug. I can try stretching a bit. Can try a new plug. Carb not flooding and I have cleaned it three times but maybe I missed something. Choke functions as expected.

New fuel tried. No difference.
Carb and ignition seem to work well at all RPM. Until the motor stops that is. Spark ok on pull. Puzzling.

Well RAI, Any update on it? Curious to know what the issue was.
Thanks
It will take them at least a week!
I'm betting on the plug.
If it is a vintage model, no one has suggested the points, they are a bugger to get to under the start cord assy, but it is probably worth giving them a burnish and checking the gap.

Default Suzuki 2hp outboard cutting out after 30 secs.
Anyone have any experience of this?
The outboard starts easily, runs cleanly and then stops suddenly after about 30 secs. No splutter, just sudden death. The petrol is fresh, I have cleaned the crud out of the carburettor bowl and there is a jet of cooling water coming out of the back, although it's a bit piddley.
Do these little engines have an overheat sensor that might be malfunctioning and switching the engine off? If I leave it for 10 or 15 mins it will start again but do the same thing.
Any advice gratefully received.

Well the DT2 is back and running sweetly yesterday. Language was a difficulty but I gather it was a combination of fresh fuel and a new spark plug. So thanks and congratulations to those who advised those causes. Why my attempts at replacing the fuel and checking the plug failed remains a cause of embarrassment.

Plug! Mine did the same.

Me too. A new plug sorted it out temporarily then it started cutting out again (but never when running it ashore). Another new plug solved it permanently and it hasn't had a problem now for several years.

Apparently the old plug type is not made anymore. So the man sourced an equivalent and gave a spare, for the next time.
