Anyone have any experience of this?
The outboard starts easily, runs cleanly and then stops suddenly after about 30 secs. No splutter, just sudden death. The petrol is fresh, I have cleaned the crud out of the carburettor bowl and there is a jet of cooling water coming out of the back, although it's a bit piddley.
Do these little engines have an overheat sensor that might be malfunctioning and switching the engine off? If I leave it for 10 or 15 mins it will start again but do the same thing.
Any advice gratefully received.

Are you sure you have undone the breather screw on the filler cap enough? On some outboards it may need 2 full turns to let enough air in.

I had a similar problem some years back with a Suzuki 8. I discovered that if I started it then disconnected the petrol feed after a few seconds it would keep running until the bowl was empty - which gave me a useable, if fiddly, work-round. Adjustment of the float stop fixed the problem - the bowl was overfilling and giving an over-rich mixture.

Had exactly this problem this year with our Suzuki 2.2 Turned out to be problem with fuel tap not letting fuel through. New part, problem fixed.

Had a similar problem at the start of the season with mine.. cleaned out the bowl, jets etc, but the mainjet was not properly seated, hence it would start then stop again very quickly... check the jets!

I have had exactly that problem on my very lightly used Suzuki 2.2. Initially it would restart after a few minutes and after cleaning crud out of the tap and filter (which I had trouble finding because it got stuck in the tank and didn't come off with the tap) it worked well enough to get me out to my swinging mooring. Problem solved - I thought naively! Coming back from the boat it did the same again and wouldn't restart. At home, I found some water in the tank so I cleaned out the tank, tap and filter and drained the carburrettor bowl. Still no luck. It won't even start now. There is a spark at the plug and the plug gets wet so fuel is getting through (and it runs through the hose if I disconnect it). My thoughts now are that it is either a stuck (open) float or possibly some crud in the jet.

The way it suddenly cuts out is slightly confusing because normally, if you cut the fuel off deliberately the engine note changes and then it splutters before cutting out - with this problem it is very sudden. I have even checked that the engine hasn't seized.

All ideas gratefully received. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Had exactly this problem with an Evenrude 4 Hp. After probs for a whole season decided to strip the engine over the winter. Eventually found a small build up of debris in the needle valve of the carb. Blew it out and its worked faultlessly for the last ten years

I had something similar on a small outboard - turned out the kill cord clip was for a different make and wasnt thick enough so the kill switch closed as the rubber switch covering crept back ....
normally just when opening up to flat out to scream across the Hamble on a Sunday at 1600...

Judging by the lack of the words "No it's definitely not the breather" in the response above my money would be on that! It's often the simplest things and THAT one caught me out before hehe! Good luck anyhow.
