Sutton Courtenay

we go on our thames cruise holiday at the end of next week, and I was looking at new places to visit. Has anyone got any experiences of Sutton Courtenay, near Culham lock.
It looks like there are a few pubs there but not sure from memory if there is any where to moor up (whether for a few hours or overnight), so we can go for a walk around the area.
anyone got any views on the area?

Hi, great place to visit. We always moor in the lock cut 100 yards above Culham lock, there is a lay-by on left and walk across the pools to the village.

From memory about three pubs including the one where there was a murder...

Definitely worth a look and great walk across the weirs and in over the Mill, two good pubs the Fishes and another I cant remember the name of but does Tapas.
You can moor in the layby as Apollo recommends or just below Culham bridge, also in a S23 you should be able to get under the weir stream side of Culham bridge and moor in the field on the right.
Also worth turning left on the upstream exit of Culham lock cut and heading round to the weirs, you can go as far as the Mill until you have to turn around, quite a few boats moored around the back there including a Sunseeker! If you have never been round there you have missed out, you can again moor on the lock Island field as long as you don't make a fuss.

The Fish is nice, the Swan is nice and the George and Dragon is OK at a push.
It's nice and quiet past the danger sign most people avoid the area because of the sign. You do get a few rowers, but only a few and I've only ever seen one hire boat

There's a nice mooring on the right about 100 yards in from the sign. There is/was a no mooring sign (hardly visible) nailed to a tree, but I'm not sure who put it there and plenty of boats including us have moored up there.
There are a few nice moorings on the island bank as Chris has said, its a route for the local dog walkers but only ever had one come on the boat. Watch your depth on the first one (upstream of the pole)
Sometimes you can find a spot between the weirs, but we prefer it above the rope barriers.

Used to moor in the pools and go to the pub next to the church, where they played Aunt Sally (sp?) and never got round to walking around the church yard. Last time we tried perhaps 20 years ago we had some depth problems mid stream. The layby above the lock is OK as long as there aren't too many semi abandoned boats. You can go on a pleasant round trip walk involving the adjacent bridge, Culham, the bridge below the lock, across to Sutton Courtney, and across the field back to the layby. Really used to like the pub in Culham as well (The Lion?) but now closed.
