Can anyone suggest a reasonably priced surveyor for 27ft sailboat in Chichester area?

According to my insurers (Craftinsure)- I need another survey - last one 7 years ago - is this a normal request?

Any help would be appreciated.

It is a common request but you always have the option of looking for an insurance company which does not require a survey

7 years seems a bit of an odd interval, unless some major repairs have just been done ?

Bearing in mind the hassle and cost of a survey, I'd contact your insurers and ask ' Are you sure ? ' - I did this when I'd had my boat surveyed one year, then was asked for another the next season !

I contacted my insurers ( Haven ) and asked ' you are joking, wren't you ? ' and they agreed, ' sorry, see what you mean; OK no surveys ever again then Sir ' - which I reckon a result, and they know it makes me more likely to stay with them; I suspect the request for one a year was down to some newbie in the office.

if you do need a survey, Chrissie of Endeavour Surveys is highly thought of on here, she did a friends' boat and he was impressed; but I have seen someone just the other day mention they were having trouble contacting her - worth a google and a try in case it was just a glitch.

Your yard or club can almost certainly recommend someone, just make sure they are what you want, not a case of ' Good Old Eric who buys us a bottle at Christmas '.

Surveyors vary enormously in both competence and fees, and like most things high prices don't guarantee the best so try to get recommendations; as you may know there are various grades of survey, from an insurance check to a full monty masthead to keel bolts drawn job.

"For boats over 20 years old and more than 23ft in length, you will need to have a survey report not more than 3 years old and be able to confirm that all recommendations have been complied with."... you didn't mention how old your boat was??

As others have suggested - if you've been with them for the whole time since the last survey, I'd ring them up and double check....

Try Yachting 24, I insured my 40 year old Vega with them. They're underwritten by Pantaenius, I've read a couple of reports of good claims handling on here, premium was very competitive & no survey required...

Depending on the age and value of the boat why not consider going for third party insurance? I did and no surveys have ever been required. I want insurance against catastrophes - like hitting a lawyer's mega yacht - not against getting a ding in my topsides.

Thanks Guys - Since posting the question I have been waiting for a replacement engine to be fitted - The boat goes back into the water at the end of this week - If engine fitted - so no time for a survey - maybe I'll change Insurance companies if necessary.

Boat is 26 years old and the last survey when I bought her cost me well over £200 and didn't tell me anything of importance - so maybe we can do without.
