Hello, My boat is currently ashore in Arzal in Brittany. Before launch I need to get a survey completed for insurance. What do folks expect to pay for an insurance Survey? Any recommendation of surveyors in the Brittany (or surrounding) area?

You could try this guy, English living in Morbihan. I didn't need to use him in the end but he was most helpful:

Damian Likely

Assoc. IIMS, Affil YDSA
Principal Surveyor

I used Loïc Blanken for a pre-purchase survey at Arzal last year and was quite happy. I had a quote from Damien Likely and recall it seemed a bit pricey, especially his travel expenses.

Go on recommendation and membership of IIMS or YDSA, or the french equivalent.
Handy for finding faults that need attention as well !
If you can find one that is very familiar with your type of boat, even better.....

An insurance survey is more limited (and a bit cheaper) than a pre purchase survey. Many surveyors list what they cover on their websites. an insurance survey is to satisfy the insurer that the boat exists, is in a seaworthy condition and that it is worth what is claimed as insured value. They should avoid long lists of things that might need replacing such as you would get in a pre purchase for use as bargaining. Check your insurer will accept your surveyor. UK insurers usually ask for members of one of the professional bodies so you will be OK with the one suggested.

Damian Likely did an insurance survey for me 3 years ago. He spent about 6 hours on a 9m boat and it was the best survey I have had in 30 years. I was in attendance & he took time out to explain everything he was doing and why, so I learned a great deal about my boat and it helped me develop a maintenance plan for the future. As I remember his fees were reasonable.

I have used Damien Likely too at the end of last year and would definitely recommend him. I wasn't able to accompany him due to the various lockdowns but the survey was very comprehensive supported by many photos and videos and he talked me through any issues in detail.

Hi All,
I expect to be asked by my insurers to have an up to date survey ( last one 2018) .Boat is on the hard in Arzal ( South Brittany ) . Is there a number for Logic Blanken ? Any other contacts ( I have Mr Likelys) would be appreciated
