I find the survey-sketches and plans in e.g. 'Falkland Island Shores' by Southby-Tailyour and similar in other RCC publications to be fascinating. How are the skills acquired? Is there a known tome on 'inshore surveying'....?

a seven year indentured apprenticeship to UKHO, or a smartphone app.

Plymouth has a distance learning module

Plus you now have to take care not to harass marine life

I've been peripherally involved in some community broadband work with a chap who is putting repeaters all over Exmoor. He uses a standard mapping app on his Nokia, and takes pictures at each 'station'. These are then loaded into a graphics program to provide clear 360 degree views from each aerial location. Very similar to the wonderful draughtsman sketches in Admiralty Pilots, but in colour, visually accurate, and very much quicker. Sic tranist gloria mundi ?
