We are having our new ( hopefully ) boat surveyed and sea trail on friday , Sealine F36 with KAMD44s . Has anyone got any pointers on things to check , ie max temps / max rpms/speed / anything that breaks easily etc ,allthough the surveyor should know all this stuff i would like to know for myself on the day . ( or am i being to anal about it :o ).Thanks in advance guys .
 
Thanks Rafiki , Paul has allready told me about valve adjustment on KAMD 44s , just wondering how long you need to run at fast cruise to prove engines not overheating .
 
You really need to put them under load. I need to clear out the heat exchangers on Rafiki. The engines are fine up to 2000 rpm, but temp climbs quickly under load above this speed.

Keep an eye on oil pressure too. After a good 20 mins blast, the pressures need to reamin in spec. The oil does not really get hot unless it has been put under load for 20 mins.

The sea trial should show these issues. A mechanical survey should be considered too. VolvoP might do this?

While a good survey will show most structural issues, you will learn more from a good 2-3 hour crawl over the boat with a fine toothcomb. Don't be afraid to open everything you can and look underneath.
 
No you're not being anal. I've bought a few used boats in my time and I always make a point of being around when the surveyor does his inspection and for the sea trial. With regard to the surveyor, he is duty bound to report everything and if he misses something he may be legally liable so survey reports always read as if the boat is riddled with faults. I find that if you talk to the surveyor during the survey, he will usually be willing to go ever the faults he has found and you will get a much better idea actually how serious they are or not. With regard to the seatrial, the most important point is to check that the boat reaches the manufacturer's quoted max speed at the engines' quoted max rpm. Older boats may be down on both due to age and overloading but more than say 2-3 kts difference needs investigating before you commit. Obviously you should check that all engine guages are reading normally under load but be aware that often the sensor is the problem rather than the engine. An oil analysis is always a good idea but it has to be related to the number of engine hours since the oil was changed. Also check for odd noises and vibrations and again make sure you investigate these before committing. It is always a good idea to have a qualified engine specialist onboard to give an opinion and possibly a report on engine condition. Lastly test every single onboard system. This is your last chance to get the seller to rectify any faults. Once you buy the boat, all of the faults are your problem

My F36 with KAD43's has served us well as the main school training boat. Now done about 4500 hrs, biggest probs where stb head gasket, port fuel pump, usual worn out water pumps, oh and the bloomin V belt tensioner for the compressor belt they fail regularly it seems.

Other then that shes fine and a good sea boat, I brought her round from Menorca to Costa del sol in 2003
 
Well everything was ok , surveyor happy -speed and engine temps all ok so its all going ahead :D:D:D,

Does anyone know what the hull extension does and would you have the big annodes on the flat part of the hull . Surveyor also recommended cleaning the antifoul of the rudders and P brackets ,has anyone got an opinion on that ?.
 
Thanks guys , i think that i will take the antifoul of the P brackets and rudders and possibly move the shaft annodes up to the hull end of the shafts .
