According to a recent study concerning vessel Collisions in Spanish waters between 2008 and 2015, 27% of the collisions were caused by the misuse of the electronic equipment onboard!

We currently running a research project about Collision Regs and we are asking skippers (professional or otherwise) to take part in a survey to find out the most common causes of Collisions at Sea.
The survey is not designed to test your knowledge, just to find out how skippers react to possible collision situations at sea.

And what organisation do you represent ? Given the number of ways that "Collisions At Sea" are tracked by NGOs and nonNGOs, I am surprised you cannot tap into comprehensive data far in excess of what the forum can offer you.

I am the principal of Sea Teach, an RYA Sea School based in Spain, and we are partners in a European project researching collisions at sea and their relationship to the use of electronic navigational equipment/ aids.

This is correct but we welcome input from any pleasure boater who holds a commercially endorsed RYA COC, i.e YM, Day Skipper or even Power Boater.

So the questionnaire is primarily targeted at commercial/professional users in large ships, relying on technology to implement Colregs ?

Seems quite a long way from the way that the RYA, for instance, teaches the subject to forum people who will nearly all be in your <200GRT category. It's all a bit horse before the cart; where's the tested hypothesis underlying the thesis that "NEOCOL" is the way forward to avoid collisions ?

I am not knocking the idea that technology can reduce or prevent collisions, but on the basis that the project is focussing on data from a nation not known for outstanding performance in maritime safety, it seems that you are drawing on a very small sector of resources referencing collisions and near collisions which are plentifully available from larger countries and international marine safety organisations.

There is also an issue with your appropriation, without any indication of information security commitments, of email addresses and contacts if people want feedback. It's all a bit gung-ho and lacking rigour.
 
Your questionnaire needs some 'don't know' columns and an answer for amateur sailor where professional qualification is asked.

I have not a clue what ECDIS so cannot comment on it, yet I could not complete the survey, nor did I have a clue what the last question was about.

On the third attempt to submit I gave up.

I am unimpressed.
I've been sailing/yachting for years, and got a Coastal Skipper ticket in 1987. However, I am unable to answer section 7 since none of the answers apply and section 8 definitely doesn't - although I last worked onboard a vessel professionally in 1988 as Medical Officer on HMS SUPERB!!!!

If you want "pleasure boaters'" input perhaps you could produce a survey we can answer, instead of wasting our time...
 
There is to much emphasis on automated systems, however reading and understanding the exercises in this book (SEAMAN’S GUIDE TO THE RULE OF THE ROAD) covers all situations very clearly with exercises and as far as I'm concerned as a commercial ocean yachtmaster is all that's required.

Also your website needs a better English translator.
