Surprisingly rough on Dartmouth moorings

My new this year trot mooring in Old Mill Creek ,Dartmouth I had assumed was well sheltered deep in the creek and steep wooded banks to three sides. However when checking the boat yesterday I was surprised to find half my wheelhouse front screen gone, broken 6mm acrylic and pulled about 15 small screws, the glass circular lens from my decklight lying on the side deck and a thermos flask which was stood on a shelf with the top screw on cup quite flattened which suggests a sudden lift of the boat.
They are not big problems as boats go but surprising to me at that location.
 
Sorry to hear that - you don't need extra jobs added to the list - especially if they let the water in. Collision damage, maybe? A boat going walk-about on it's own?
 
It doesn't sound like the sort of damage you would get from bad weather on a mooring.

Have you thought of claiming on your insurance?
 
Sounds like some plonker on a big motorboat just off the plane going close by.

Once had green water right over a boat on a glassy flat calm in the Clyde - huge wash from nuclear submarine giving it some beans on the surface. Unlikely up the Dart though....

But only very slowly. .........
We were visiting so the cadets from BRNC could take a look round.
 
We did have a NE gale recently which would blow straight up the creek.

Would that, combined with the ebb tide which sweeps into the creek cause a problem? Are you on a drying mooring?
 
Perhaps just touch down but only on the lowest tides. The front wheelhouse window does puzzle me, It is 5ft 4 ins wide and 2ft 3 ins and has a clean break across the centre. The missing screws is a puzzle as there were none on the foredeck or side decks which I would have expected if there had been gradual working loose from the window before flapping loose and breaking off.
There is a family of seals that reside a lot of the time on a nearby disused pontoon and I wondered if a seal had sat on the screen, broken it and it had then blown out but there was no slime or sign of a seal presence. I did actually wonder if someone had wanted a piece of acrylic and had removed the screws to the centre and then just levered a good sized piece until it broke off or was disturbed took off and the loose end blew out?
I am moored facing the NE so I would think if it had blown out it would be from the SW which is the nearby high wooded bank.

My boat is on a swing mooring opposite Noss Marina on the Dart. The wind can howl up the valley’s when in the right (wrong) direction. That combined with a strong wind over tide could cause the damage you suffered.

I met a guy down there who does a boat check service, either adhoc or scheduled. I live a couple of hours away so will use him to keep an eye on the boat following heavy weather. PM me if you want contact details.
