Re fitting windows with butyl sealant, put plenty on then as you tighten the bolts it extrudes out, but the aim is not to over tighten and expel all the sealant but you are still left with a surplus, so here is the question, clean it all away so none is visible, the neatest, or leave a smoothed off fillet around the edge of the frames, extra protection but less tidy. can it be trimmed back later or cleaned off with white spirit?

I sealed the wheelhouse roof hatch with butyl tape 14 months ago. I trimmed it back straight after installation - and again in June, September, December and guess what? I reckon more has oozed out than I put in in the first place

Butyl will carry on extruding for ages, so no point trimming it any time soon. However, it does attract muck so best to trim eventually. Olive oil can be used to clean smears from perspex - it's harmless to it.

do you just cut with a Stanley knife and scrap off the surplus?

Is that a problem? If it keeps on extruding does it leave enough to form a seal?

No doesn't seem to be, there is still plenty of butyl in the joint, my hatch is still completely water tight. BTW I use a normal putty knife to trim it. Less aggressive than a craft knife.
