Is this the surge I keep hearing about? The river has risen here 18" today. We are now about 18" below 2003. It may be 2' below its hard to judge. I now need my 4wd to drive on the river bank as it is under about 6" in places. My lower lawns and paddocks are under 18" in places but they are below the bankside levels anyway. My causway down to the river is still high and dry.

It is difficult to predict exactly - up here, the landowners who control a lot of the water on the river Coln which joins the Thames will be playing with their weirs / gates etc. as will the EA (usually talking to each other!), so some water will be held back and come later - apparently they generally flood the fields here in preference to sending it into houses in Oxford, which does make sense /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

However, the floods are down considerably in this area, but with a lot of fields still under water, so no abatement just yet...

We've (Staines) been told to expect an extra 600mm by the EA Wednesday through to Thursday. I must say that I am very impressed by the steady state of the level and stream but it cannot last forever.

I thought Tone's post to be very true: lots of media frenzy and it is hard to pick out the truth underneath. To be honest, I have found reading posts here, coupled with (very good) EA spokespeople, has helped me understand what is going on.

What is 600mm in English?

I still haven't got over the Dickheads at Envag using Kilos for speeds instead of the world-wide measurements of Knots but I guess thats the price we have to pay for having peeps that have no maritime knowledge.

Sorry - didn't want to offend by using metric

But that is the measure I got and I knew how to convert, as I suspect you do too /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I genuinely do not understand metric other than a Metre because that's a Yard. I can think equally in $ and £ but have only just got my head around metric money /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Back to Surge. Overnight it went up about 6" here and in places it has now trickled over my causeway. In essence it means the levels here are now roughly 4½ feet above normal for my area. BBC just said it peaks at Wallingford around lunch time so I suppose with luck it will start falling away late afternoon.

Just been emailed by a friend with a boat at Chertsey Meads. 2" (50mm if you prefer) below the bankside at the yard, fields the other side of the river are flooded. The "Meads" part is a giveaway...

I was brought up with both metric and Imperial, must have been away when they did the acre as I have no concept of how big it is. Can't do charts in fathoms, but 1ft = 2m is easy enough, if too small. Quite happy to mix units as useful, "turn down to 10mm bare then take a couple of thou off" is fine by me:)

Abingdon no change at 8am

Checked the river at Clifton, Culham and Abingdon on my way to work, there is no change in level overnight, its still as Parahandys photo at Culham lock, about 4" below the 1947 flood mark.

Theres still a lot of water coming down from somewhere, apparently it rose in Oxford last night, so either that surge is keeping the level up or there is bit more to come.

Poor SWMBO was in tears this morning about this wedding reception. I've been all project managery, done a risk assessment, and tried to convince her that putting up a marquee and having a 100 guests here on Friday when the water only needs to rise a few inches to cover our garden is not a good move. A local pub has offered to take us in, or we could postpone.

What is frustrating her is that the conflicting advice and news reports prevent her from making what she feels is an informed decision. I think her desire to use the house (for it does look fantastic when partied up) is blurring judgement, though I do have compassion for the situation.

I'd be relatively relaxed about the whole flooding thing if it weren't for this!

The recognised abbreviation for fathom is fm, sometimes fth, even fthm but never ft which stands for foot. You could easily run aground using your notation /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
