Southport is on Australia's east coast about 250k south of Brisbane, next door to Surfers Paradise. The entrance is only 100m wide and the bar is quite short about 400m. It has quite a reputation!

its an hours drive s of brisbane, and is the entrance to a series of sheltered waterways behind s stradbroke island etc. there is almost always a swell tho not often as big as that.

got engaged on the spit when there was a similar swell running :) firmly on the land however.

would personally not have risked it, but maybe he has done it many time before who knows?

I just watched this video and thought I would share it...

Interesting that the Skipper is made out to be a hero - it looks like a crazy thing to have attempted, and I think he only just got away with it!

How about this one from the Baltic? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twDGv1-q-7I

Scary eh? What was this Muppet thinking? And god knows what the guy standing up in the bow is doing...pointing the way?
None of the crew are wearing buoyancy aids…and if you look closely at 0.35 they come within what looks like inches of a concrete pier shown awash at the start of the video...
Also at 0.48 there are real close to floating debris…maybe the last guy who tried to get in here??

This is a Polish registered Delphia 40, probably one from the charter company based in Gdansk

If you read the caption it's easy to guess what's happening: they were in about 40 knots of wind, had been out at sea for 26 hours and of the 9 people aboard only 1 was experienced.

Hmmmm.

Did either helm consider there to be danger in getting in? Very likely.

Would either vessel have come to any harm standing off? Very unlikely.

Speaks for itself.
