Surfing for beginners II - staying out at sea

It has been posted before. I think if you look at the sea state it could not be little waves and a model yacht, the water would behave entirely differently.

That was always the give away on some war films where they used models. This sea looks and behaves like the real thing IMHO.

I know what you're saying, but in this case, I humbly beg to differ:

The foam on a lot of the waves is too 'coarse';
There's no spray;
The way the headsail flaps 20 seconds in;
The breaking wave close to the camera which runs up to the boat at from ~37 seconds to the end....

It's extremely good, but my money's still on a bigg-ish model in beach surf with a camera held at a low angle.

All IMHO /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

And I suppose that's Action Man by the mizzen? Don't be such a twat.

From their web site :
[ QUOTE ]
During the autumn of ’97 a hurricane in the North Sea generated such monster waves that Anita was knocked down and partly capsized. Major damage was sustained. The doghouse was smashed, the mizzenmast broken and lots of deck equipment washed away. Some of the crew also suffered severe injuries but under the watchful eye of the German Lifeboat service Anita made it back to Helgoland in relatively one piece.

Can't see anyone at all on board, and I take exception to being called a twat by someone I've never met.

Well Andy if you can't stand the heat... You make an absurd and ill -informed comment and you expect people to be nice and respectful?

The sea conditions in the video are quite unusual with very short steep waves but that kind of thing is not exceptional in the North Sea. I see absolutely nothing in the video to persuade me it's not completely authentic.

You may disagree that it's a model (I'm with you there) but the fact that someone has a different opinion shouldn't require you to resort to abuse - or are you trying to demonstrate how sophisticated you can be (not)?

I can understand Andy being annoyed (even if he is wrong /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif)

Well maybe so, it's a pretty mild insult in my book and only used in this case in response to a ludicrously naive claim.

[/ QUOTE ] Not my intention to take sides in this exercise in etiquette, merely chucking in the observation that one man's friendly banter (mild insult) is another's uncouth name-calling.

For some time I laboured under the delusion that "twat" was the modern variant of "twit" and succeeded in both amusing and embarrassing my children (who refused point blank to let me into the secret of what "twat" meant).

I'm sorry but it is uncalled for and this sort of instant resort to personal insult is part of the reason why many long term users of the forum are leaving it. As for 'if you cant take the heat' I don't think many right minded people in here enjoy that sort of language tossed about.

Yup!!!!! Said "Bugger it" a few months ago for this very reason. 1st time back and here we go again. Guess this will earn me a deluge of "Can't stand the heat etc. etc.etc"

Thanks for the support, guys /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I guess we'll have to agree to differ about the model thing.....
