......works fine on engine heating. However on 240v, leaving it turned on for an hour produces very little hot water. I wonder if its the thermostat or the element or both if they are the same unit...... The pic attached shows the thermostat which appears to be set correctly. The manual indicates an overheat button but this has never popped out anyway. Any ideas on trouble shooting ? The calorifier on only 2 years old.

Is this a 'new problem' - i.e. was it fine on immersion heating previously but has since deteriorated? What is the kW rating of the immersion heater element? My Surecal 22l heats up very quickly (say ca. 20 minutes) on engine heating , with a small diesel engine of ca. 700cc, but takes a lot longer (at least twice as long I reckon) with the immersion heater - the rating of which I cannot recall offhand, but is I think 1kW.

Its an all in one unit. It says 16A 240v but I bet its only 1kw with a thermostat switch rating of 16A.

Think you need a new one. If its been on hard water it could be scaled and useless.

Our domestic one went recently and the electrician (sent by landlord) tested it with his multimeter to confirm is was dud. Maybe there’s a method for this (unbeknownst to me!)?

It’s a 1kw immersion heater

I’m reluctant to post stuff I’ve just looked up myself online as advice - especially with 240v!

But it does sound like a multimeter resistance test could indicate a fault in the coil: testing immersion heaters

I think the thermostat is simpler still. Just turn it and check for continuity. Doesn’t need to be connected for any of these tests (and rightly so - as, otherwise, I wouldn’t personally go near it with a multimeter!).

Thinking about it further - a check for continuity across those terminals (strictly only when disconnected of course) make sense as a starting point. You should see continuity unless the temp of the water in it is above that set by the thermostat. I really am among the more ‘electrically challenged’ myself, though! Someone more knowledgeable will come along soon… ??
