The boat that I may (allegedly) be buying is German registered.

It needs to be UK-registered.

Do I need the above for that purpose or is it unnecessary for a pleasure boat..please advise as £ 180 is stupid for ANOTHER bit of paper for a bog standard 2nd hand boat...

What do they think ??

.. HEADLINES:-

'US cities threatened by AL Qaeda who confirm that they have converted Superhawk 48 into Class 4 Nuclear Submarine'.......idiots

Yes, you have to have it measured for tonnage. At least, we did 3 yrs ago when pt 1 registering a fairline. I think a bloke came out to measure the boat (with a tape measure, not a weighing scale). Then he pronounced its tonnage was X. This bears no resemblence to its actual weight. Then we were told to affix a brass plate saying "Registered tonnage X", which we duly did, when we got round to it

I have heard that for a standard production boat they know the answer and do not have to measure it, but in our case (a very production boat, nuthin special) they still measured it. Total waste of time and £200. Welcome to boat ownership.

That's it. I have a mission for the week. Find out if there is a way of self-certification.

Not a matter of money , just of pig-headedness.

Bloody idiots, who do they think they are , Labour Politicians?

£200 wellspent

Oooh no. You cannot self certify a piece of data as critical as the Part One tonnage of a Superhawk 48. I mean, what if you measured it a bit wrong! What would happen then? Think about it man, think about the consequences!

No, I sleep better at night knowing the 3456 tons figure on the brass plate attached to my fairline TV cabinet door has been measured by a totally professional boat measurer. Or wassit 3.456 tons?

No, if you want to diy Learner, stick to servicing your own liferaft and making seacharts on Powerpoint. Leave professional stuff to professionals.

RYA will do tonnage survey for boat up to 15m for £135 (£175 >15m). That's if the boat is in the UK.

Think yourself lucky it's only that much! We've paid over £800 for tonnage survey on a 24m boat.

You definitely need to have a tonnage measurement to get the boat UK registered and that has to be done by a qualified surveyor. Its a load of bollocks but thats what you need. But £180 is not the end of it. The whole process of de-registering in Germany and re-registering in the UK will cost you about £700 and then you will have to have ORIGINALS (not photocopies) of all documentation including builders certificate, original sales invoice and invoices/bills of sale for all subsequent changes of ownership. This can be a nightmare so make sure that your sale is conditional upon the supply of this documentation. Unfortunately, German registry is less onerous than UK registry so this documentation may not be available. There is an alternative which is to register in Guernsey which will cost the same and still require a tonnage measurement but the requirements for documentation are less onerous
