Whilst looking at the National Data Buoy web site to check on the wind strengths at the Lyme Bay Buoy (which doesn’t seem to be working), I clicked on the maintenance schedule link www.ndbc.noaa.gov/ops.shtml
Some of the information there is quite informative eg ‘Tow and moor at original location’ and ‘Support requested to restore transmissions’. I think we can all understand those comments.
The two comments against the SAUF1 station are not quite as informative but are much more interesting. The first comment on the maintenance schedule is ‘Unknown Pier is now a boardwalk due to sand fill operation.’
The mind boggles! If the pier is unknown, how do they know it is there? Have they filled in the pier (once they found it) with sand or has the sand been piled up around the edges? Is their sensor now totally buried?
The next comment is equally baffling but does explain why our coastal waters are so cold ‘Waiting for city to extend pier to repair water temp.’
If only we had maintained all our piers in tip top condition and made them longer, our coastal waters would be much warmer. We could probably swim all year round and a dip off the stern of the boat would not longer bring the risk of cardiac arrest!

My oh my what a wonderful day!
