hi all,

after a disasterous attempt at getting the seacocks /fittings I want for MiToS in Athens on Friday, I'm back searching the web for a shop stocking what I want at reasonable prices.

ASAP have 1 out of 4 in stock (ok, from the ones I want that is) and came across Mack Engineering that have the bits I want (or I THINK at least...)
Any other suggestions, or should I get them from Mack Eng?
Forespar's own website is a complex mess, various serial numbers, in some cases little info on the differences, gave me a headache.
Still missing a few bits but they are for above w/l so not bothered.

Just for the record, I'm after:

4X 3/4 inch seacocks with straight hose fitting
2X 1 1/4 inch seacocks with straight hose fitting

Along the same lines, I know JFM suggested Guidi strainers, are the marelon ones any good (especially for engines?) as I'm struggling to find 1 1/4 inch guidi ones down here and I'm not paying shipping for them from the UK, too bleeding heavy these bits!

cheers

thanks,

aquafax only do two sizes and seem to stock 1/20th of the range :(

good to know re Mack Eng, unless I get any other pointers, i'll order from them

cheers

Aquafax are wholesalers with a little bit of retail, I would be suprised if they dont have the stock/supply.

In my last two boats I had what i thought were Guidi sea strainers glass top with a cast metal frame and 4 bolts holding down on to a cast metal body with a metal removable strainer, there is a 3 pointed star like a mecedes logo without the ring around the points? I have removed two sets of these and replaced them with Vetus plastic units with spin on clear plastic lids and plastic baskets.

I have corrosion in the metal ones and they are a pain the ass to remove the lid.

The only caveat is whether the seastrainer is on the suction side of the raw water pump or on the pressure side, i would probably not use the Vetus ones on the pressure side but this is rare.

Can't you buy direct from Forespar?? http://www.forespar.com/index.shtml

nope, tried it, asks for zip code so obviously tuned/limited to US market. Which is fine and fair to their dealers.

don't be, they practically have nothing in stock (or at least that's what their website says) and I'm not getting in the emailing business just to see if and when they bring new stock. Mind, some of the bits I want are not even listed in their website/e-shop!

Yes, looks like you DIDN'T have quidi. Their logo is different and quite clear and easy to spot:

Don't mind plastic ones, even forespar own ones, only not so sure about size/capacity issues for the engine ones.

Not sure I get the comment on the pressure side??? On an engine it's always on the suction side isn't it?

Some modern engines have the seastrainer on pressure side.

I will look at the old strainers which are at home and see if I can find the RG logo, Beware Guidi according to their website make seatrainers in brass as well as bronze.

slightly shifting the topic here, but would like some comments!

I'm currently in Athens among other things picking bits for MiToS refit, and was told of a co selling pipes (odourless, non-toxic et al) for water and waste applications.
Now, this guy, lovely chap that knows what he's talking about and has a massive selection of pipes, also deals with Trudesign synthetic fittings, valves, diverters, thru hull, you name it.

Anyone know how they fare against marelon?

Seriously considering them!

As you would expect, popular down under where they are made. No reason to think they would not be OK.

The difficulty you are finding in buying non metallic valves in Europe is simply because they are not popular, not necessarily because they are not good, but because perfectly adequate DZR valves are freely available so there is little incentive to use anything else. Therefore very few dealers keep them in stock - no demand, no supply!

thanks for the comments Tranona, makes absolute sense. They are both glass reinfornced plastic, feel nicer to my hand (ok, that's not a subjective measure by any stretch :D ) guy is helpful and knows what he's talking about (which is NOT the case compared to brass bronze dzr valves stockists down here BTW) so I'm more confident buying that rather than some supposedly DZR kit that has no proper markings and no way of knowing what exactly you're buying. Yes, I know I can get the load all from ASAP, but not really making financial sense especially since boat will be in the water for 3-5m with the rest of the year on the hard.

cheers
