Covid-19: mega-yachts fore runners of Italian tourism market recovery

Mega yachts that are flagships within the highest luxury tourism range might be the forerunner of a global recovery of the entire Italian tourism market by towing out of the Covid-19 emergency those geographical areas, first and foremost Sardinia, that mostly suffered the negative impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.

According to a flash analysis set up by the Yacht Section of Federagenti, mega and maxi yachts are potential messenger of safe and virus-free holydays thanks to a limited number of passengers (no more than 12), reduced and highly selected crew, easy monitoring of their movements.

We are conscious – Mr Giovanni Gasparini, president of the Federagenti yacht stated – that we have to act with maximum prudence, with mooring in the harbour or in areas of marinas that are not easy to access. We are therefore confident that the mega yacht market might reactivate technical activities, maintenance, procurement and catering thus awakening the entire system. Mega yachts can also symbolically encourage and support a global recovery of small nautical boats, giving new life to the entire supply chain and easing a recovery even during the upcoming summer season.

According to Gasparini, it would be now indispensable that regions like Sardinia engage in an active role, in close collaboration with the large groups that represent the most important pleasure craft that usually operate in the Mediterranean (in 2019 there were more than 1500 mega yacht sailing the Med), ensuring for example areas not free access in marinas, certified procedures of sanitization of the docks, safe ground routes, for example to shops and catering establishments providing high levels of protection.
