Sorry its non boaty, but the solution might help someone with simular probs....

Can anyone please suggest something cheap that will eat into and dissolve a glued bodge repair done to a piece of porcellin, I can only assume its being done with superglue. And its holding like the proverbial...

Have tried gently to press it out, but I am reluctant to put to much pressure on it,
"Its a nice piece of clarice" lol. or was...

Anyone got any ideas ?

many thanks

Try acetone...

Acetone, commonly available in nail polish remover, is one possible solvent for this job - but be aware that not all nail polish removers contain acetone (check the label). You'd probably need to soak the pottery for a while, maybe in a sealed plastic container to stop the solvent evaporating away.

Re: Try acetone...

Nail polish remover contains oils (IIRC) that would jeopardize future glueing, so suggest proper acetone would be better as this evaporates leaving no residues. As previously suggested I agree soaking in a sealed container as it evaporates fast and the fumes are harmful. Acetone is sometimes sold in small quantities as paintbrush cleaner.

There is a proprietry "de-bonder" available for super glue, it works but it takes time. I have had some for a long time and I saw a different brand (Bostick I think) in Homebase the other day.

If the acetone doesn't work, remove all trace of it by washing with water and place the porcelain in a cold oven and s l o w l y raise the temperature until you reach 120 deg C. so as not to thermally stress any of the parts. Around 5 hours raising the temp 10 deg at a time should do it for a smallish piece.
The binding resin, be it superglue or epoxy, which is resistant to acetone will become soft and easily separated. 120 deg will give a nasty burn. Make sure you have protective gloves. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well its sorted

Took your advice with the hot water, did not boil the complete piece.

Just boiled the kettle and heated the relevant part with the steam from the spout, couple of minutes and it was off, very easily..

thanks for all the suggestions
