Hi

Just trying to resolve a supercharger on a cad42 issue i have, mine started sparking and trippng out on my boat last year. i have heard you can buy a kit or something to re condition them just wondered if any one has any experiences with this been ringing round and the price for a new one is around the same money as a small jet aircraft so just looking at all my options.

thanking you for any help that you may have

kind regards

Danny

You can replace the clutch but other than that you cannot recondition them AFAIK. The question really is why did the clutch go.

When I bought my boat (project) the superchargers had been disconnected because one of the supercharger vanes had shredded and locked up. I can only presume it had been overheated. My understanding is that they are only meant to be used to get you out of the hole and onto the plane and prolonged use is detrimental to them...i.e. overheat. Anyway, cut a long story short I baulked at the price too. FWIW they are Ogura units. Possibly the TX15, however I suspect more likely a one off for Volvo and only able to be sourced via them. I looked long and hard.

I believe that the bearings on the shaft that holds both vanes wear allowing movement and then the vanes start touching each other and then it all goes tits up and gets expensive.
I've been watching too much Wheeler Dealers where they had a similar experience :)

Quite common for kad engines to burn up compressors. You can change clutches its a few circlips but if its sparking its the field coil that has failed although I have not seen that happen personally, I have seen other mechanics assemble these and have made mistakes causing further damage. I personally don't mess around too much with them, well I try to avoid it if I can. Im on my work laptop and just had a look on the Volvo epc parts catalogue on a kad 42 for reference and unless you are a very competent home mechanic don't attempt.
