It isn't owned by Bill Gates, I think the owner is called Jim Clarke (also the owner of the new Athena). I think it was built at Royal Huisman.

It is indeed owned by Jim Clark. I've been on it. Built 1998 by Royal Huisman in Holland, generally regarded as the best sailboat builder in the world. Clark has just taken delivery of Athena so Hyperion is for sale. Clark is the chap who founded Silicon Graphics and Netscape

Apart from Athena it is the most computerised sailboat ever. There are about 40 16inch touchscreens all around the boat from which you can almost instantly see everthing like rig tension, nav data and charts, music, fluid levels, electricity use, whether any porthole is open, the temperature of each fridge, everything. 3000 sensors. And nearly all data is available in trend format. It isn't run by Windows, it's all Unix. It's a fabulous system, called Seascape, and incredibly intuitive to use. Clark has considered selling it commercially but only Hyp and Athena have the full installation currently. Clark and his team wrote all the software.

Hyperion is fabulous. Re painted last year. Utterly stunning cabinetry inside. The powered bosun's chair (crow's neat, you mean?) is actually the least unique feature - most yachts that size have them. yours for $29m asking price

29 Million, what a bargain! Let me talk to my bank this afternoon...

I knew it wouldn't run Windows! The first rough weather would probably bring a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) to all the touchscreens. Nice sailing that would be...

Arno

PS I did not know the Dutch had such a good name in yacht building. I'm probably not chauvinistic enough...

I thought that the word 'Yacht' was itself of Dutch origin. ;<)
I too would hesitate before describing anything or anyone as 'the best'. Best in what? In quality? In price? In economy? In delivery? In ...?
Fair Winds!
P.S. I couldn't possibly afford to hire Athena's crew.

Dutch can make boats

Ooh yes. Huisman builds the finest sailing boats on the planet. And supplies gear to other builders - eg they own Rondal. As tcm says this is very noticeable inside - the cabinet work is very noticeably better than say an Alloy Yachts equivalent.

And Feadship - also Dutch, two yards - builds the World's finest motor yachts (at least up to the maximum they can build which is something like 70metres ish - after that you have to go to Lurssen or somewhere, but hey that's a good quality problem to have). Even the second tier Dutch yards like Amels and Oceanco build yachts which are in say the top 10 by world standards

Meaning of \"best\"

Best in build quality, both engineering systems and furniture.

Best brand.

Not best price (in fact, 1.5 x price of competiton)

Not best in interior design or naval architecture, as this is often contracted out

Not best in delivery, this is a function of the project manager and the owner, as much as the yard

Re:Falmouth can make boats

We build some nice boats down at Pendennis.
MITseaAH at 156 ft was nice, motor sailer, well semi-displacement motor yacht under power, twin 12 cylinder 3,500 bhp Paxman's.
Odd thing with the spec was that it had to pass under the Brooklyn Bridge, which limited air draught to 38 meter, so the top 9 meter of the mast is telescopic.

Re: Meaning of \"best\"

Thanks, JFM, another illusion down the drain again ;-)

To answer another question "Yacht" in English is actually "Jacht" in Dutch, altough there is a subtile difference in meaning, being that a "Jacht" implies a big boat.

Still all the words are similar:
Boat = Boot
Yacht = Jacht
Ship = Schip

You do indeed, had the privilege of being (briefly) on some of them incl early Wallys. MITseaAH (where does name originate?) was quite special engineering. But you do not quite make them like Royal Huisman

Re: Meaning of "best"

Precisely!
You cannot be 'best' in all things.
Classic adage in boatbuilding: "Good, Fast, Cheap. Which one do you want to leave out?".
I believe that there was a write up in Professional Boatbuilder some time back about Dutch builders.
Just for the record and in case someone is wondering, I think that a disclaimer is in order: "I have absolutely no connection with Wally Yachts except that for many years I have been a very satisfied user of their name"

How would you rate <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.perininavi.it/XL/Uk/UBV_felicita_w.html>this</A> yard?
I always heard wonders about it, particularly with regard to the first item of your list.

Perini Navi

You mean quality of build and systems?

First off, there are not loads of yards making sailboats in that class. There's Huisman, Pendennis, Alloy, Vospers (unless M5 was a one off for them?), Jongert maybe, some come-and-gones like Valdetarro and no doubt several others I've missed (CMN, CBI....). But it's a short list and being worst might mean being in the top 10, because you dont even get to play unless you build very fine boats since the customers are smart and dont buy rubbish

I do not have first hand knowledge of Perinis, never been roiund the insides of one. So this is a bit secondhand. Perini Navi is high up on the above list but they are certainly a step down from Huisman. Perini hulls are welded in Turkey and some fit out might be done there, so they are not fully made in Viareggio any more. People say the hulls are not as fair as they should be and needs lots of bogwork to makem smooth, and that the interiors are ok but do not have the stunning quality of Huisman (whose cabinet work and finish is just awesome). So I suppose that puts them on a par with say Alloy Yachts in the foodchain of mega sailboats?
