Just spent a cracking week pottering around the Clyde from my base at Troon.......8 days of sunshine and fair breezes and only half a day of rain......made even better by listening to the news reports of doom and gloom doon south!!!.....my favourite anchorages of Kingscross, St Ninians Bay, Lochranza, Blindmans Bay, Buck Bay, Tarbert, Tighnabruach, Colintrave and Callums hole.......its hard to understand why anyone should sail anywhere else!!!! Paul.

There are one or two reasons. I have just arrived home having brought my boat back from the west coast of Scotland. We started off with two gloriously sunny weeks getting as far north as Skye. I had to tell my pal to keep reminding me ‘It’s not normally like this, and it’s 500 miles from home’. We ended up in Cambletown with heavy rain and gales.

Hi
We are off on Saturday for a weeks potter round the Clyde.

Can you tell me where the following are Blindmans Bay, Buck Bay and Callums hole as they sound just the places we are looking for.

Thanks

Two week cruise from Kip, starting this Sunday. I am hoping for some of the fair weather you encountered, otherwise I fear for the outlaws!

Blindmans Bay is the first bay on the left as you enter the West Kyle of Bute from the south, just around from Ardlamont point.

Buck Bay is on the east side of Loch Fyne directly opposite Tarbet and just north of the ferry slip at Portavadie.

Callums Hole (Glencallum Bay) is the very south tip of Bute just south of Kilchatten Bay

Hope you enjoy your trip.

Paul.

Hi

Thanks for that Paul, it is always nice to find somewhere else to go rather than the usual suspects.

Hopefully we will have the weather to enjoy them.

If you make it to Callums hole watch out for the large drying rock slightly to the north east of the centre of the bay. Other than that it's a lovely spot. The hill behind the bay is well worth a climb for the spectacular views.

Yes I did the hill on Saturday and got some great shots of Britains newest warship HMS Daering heading out of the main Largs channel on sea trials. As for the rocks yes beware at or near high water as they are covered. If you stay to the west side of the bay you will remain well clear of them, if unsure go in half tide ebb and all will be clear.

Paul.

Starboard, we must have passed you on Saturday. It was the annual outing for the spinnaker (the ship's boy was on board to do the winching) and the new ship passed as we went down west of the Cumbraes.
No time to stop at Callum's Hole or any of the other places, as ship's boy had an appointment at the airport to head off for some sailing in Turkey, lucky sod!

A force 10 storm would not make me stop in Cambletown!!!

agreed, got absolutely nothing going for it these days. Pity. Although anchoring behind the island makes for a nice lunch stop, if the weather allows.
