I was sent this picture from one of my crew members taken whilst on a North Sea delivery:

There was no indication in the email as to whether it is a sunrise or a sunset - this got me thinking... Is there a noticeable difference? and what do you think this one is?

Sunset or sunrise?

Hmmmmm. Tricky one!
At first I thought "North Sea, had to be lookingf East as no land in sight therefore HAD to be sunrise, as light stronger near horizon". Then I thought "Ah, may be long way out at sea looking west".
I have often had similar thought regarding "winter, spring, summer, autumn skyscapes - can one tell the season by the 'blue of the sky' or the cloud shapes, heights colours etc".

My GUESS is still that it's sunrise, possibly because it's SO calm, the day's wind has yet to arrive - but of course it may be the end of a calm day. The North Sea CAN have them, I'm told !!

Did your photographer inimate where his voyage was headed????? That may be a clue.

Good luck with this one - I'm intrigued.

Based on the clouds and predominant wind direction for the area I would say sunset - but that's just based on probabilities.

Whichever, one of the joys of sailing is witnessing such moments - many thanks for sharing.

If you trust the Exif data the photo was taken on Apr 27. 22:36 GMT+1 in 2009.
Looking up sunset/rise times for this date however gives: 27. Apr 2009 05:42 20:32.

Either the time zone isn't set correctly or the internal clock wasn't reset after changing batteries and restarted from when the camera was built. Blame the user.

I'm impressed with the detective work!

The guys only got home on Saturday though, so I suspect the data is inaccurate...

I'd go for sunrise too for a similar reason to a few above, the colours look cooler.... possibly.

You are going to have top find out so that we can relax. :D

I also initially guessed sunrise. The more I look at it the more I think it is sunset - it looks to me like weather coming in from the west, rather than weather disappearing to the east.

Any guesses on which this is?

The rail position suggests it's taken out the port side.
That might make it a sunrise if on an east bound passage or sunset if westbound?
Which direction was the delivery?

Yes - I had to find out really... I wouldn't want to be responsible for any lost sleep!

I am very impressed as most of you were right: I am told it was the sunrise taken last Thursday.

Here is one from the same trip of a sunset:

Sunrise, sunset

I think sunset as I have never seen a sky like at sunrise.

Perhaps you just need to get up earlier? I took a similar shot one morning in the Solent. Can't find it now so here is an Atlantic sunset.

This is my favourite passage sunset, about 500 miles from Martinique, bound for Azores and it just got better and better, taking up almost the whole sky. There was very little wind, and if I thought it was going to be half as good, I would have inflated the dinghy and rowed out to get this scene with the boat in silhouette and sails lit up pink.

I can't think that there is going to be any difference other than temperature... And surely that won't significantly change the appearance or colours?

It is strange though that most people either worked it out or more likely guessed it correctly.

For this one I am going to guess that it's a sunset. My reasoning is simply that more sunsets will be photographed than sunrises... (beautiful photo!)
