Looking next year to get something a bit bigger. I'm torn between something newer say 2000 or younger in the 28 foot range and something older but much bigger like the Sunseekers above.

I've been quite taken with some of the shots I've seen and it appears if you can dig around you can get a Martinique of 36-38/9 stature for 50K sometimes....most have KAD41 or 42 it appears.

Anyone have any advice on these boats, I know they are older but I've got time to look around until next season now. Needs to accomodate 4 peoples, 2 adults and 2 kids...so two cabins for sure..

I think it depends how mechanically minded you are. Bigger older boats are ideal for people who have the time and inclination to fix things themselves. They can be frustrating and expensive for those that don't.

hmm, done a bit of research (quite a lot actually) into these. Boats for under £50k will almost exclusively be early 36's with interesting interior joinery (read pink and pale blue highlights). The 36/38 share a hull and are about 85% the same. The 39 is a completely different boat with different hull, layout and topsides.

36's had no bathing platform and a 'hop in' cockpit and these are the most obvious visual differences. The 38 had a walk through transome door to port and a integral bathing platform (although not a very big one). Down below, I find the saloon very small but the trade off is a big master cabin forward with centreline island double bed and loads of storage. The mid cabin under the cockpit is where the 36 and 38 differ. Both have the beds across the boat, but the 36 has staggard single berths, where as the 38 has singles side by side that with the use of an infil can make a double.

The 39 has a completely differnet layout. The forward bulkhead moved forward and the main berth was offset to port. This actually made the bed longer, but it is no longer an island berth with one side running up to the hull and the foot butting up to the bulkhead. The saloon became much bigger with the galley moved to the rear port side of the cabin. This allowed a head with a seperate shower and the second cabin now runs lengthways and is a bigger than on the 36/38.

I prefer the 39, as you get a bit of wood which breaks up the white joinery I detest and in late 94 boats onwards most had the very tasteful full cherry wood joinery.

Prices wise, people are still asking way too much so you will have to be prepared to wait a bit and negotiate hard. 36's from the 80's with unpopular pastel interiors may be had for around £50k with AD41's (200Hp). Later (1989-1992) 38's are still on for £60-£75k which imho is way ott. Inwards had a nicely updated one for £55k recently which sold quite quickly. Really I think top money for a 38 is £60k and only then if it is tidy and has sorted KAD42's (230Hp). 39's do (and should) command a premium over the 38 but most owners are unrealistic, again imho. There are some on for £70k with less popular white or grey hulls. I would think that is the right money for a boat with newish electronics, sorted covers and tidy but with the more popular blue hull. Avoid bright turquiose or odd coloured craft. Anything which needs replacing deduct from that figure. late 95-96 boats probably worth another 5k as the full cherry wood is much nicer. Some 39's had Yamaha engines which were more powerful than the KADs. Not sure if this is good or bad, depends how friendly you already are with you VP main agent /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

All in, for the budget purchase I guess a 1990/91 38 which has had a bit of love makes the most sense and should be bought for only 10-15% over your proposed 50k budget.

Thanks for this. Yeah looked at that one at Inward last night after we got off the present boat. Didn't get on it but looked nice. That was the boat that made my ears prick up. Look around now can see 36 for around 50K too also looks nice.

Thanks for the heads up..plenty of time to research I guess...and the market is going to get a whole lot tighter too...buyer friendly for sure..my problem is I have to sell/trade my old boat! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yep - although they recently slashed the asking price by £5k. Not sure how much further the vendor would be prepared to go......(BTW - I've had no contact with/knowledge of said vendor).

great seach Jez I am overwhelmed at all that information, but supposedly in 1995 production of 39 Martinque was stopped to be replaced by 400 Portofino

should look also at a FL 38 Targa for similar money and for less check the Pr 366 Riviera

Hmm, yes but there are one or two 1996 Martinique 39's around, though as you say the bulk are 93-95, with only the very late 94 and 95 boats getting the cherry wood.

Agree about the FL38 and the 366, though the both seem to be less on the market and from what i can see at similar money.
