Sunday opening in France

If the weather looks good enough to risk taking some non-sailors to France this weekend, one of the incentives to encourage them is the supermarket shopping. Since I don't want to put people of sailing for life, the plan would be sail across Saturday during daylight, spend Sunday in France and sail back on Monday during daylight.

So with Sunday in France, will I find anything open?? I was particularly thinking of the supermarket in Cherbourg, cause that way I could join up with the MOA boats there.

Thanks

Generally speaking although they do make some exceptions in the run up to Christmas most of the french super/hyper markets are closed on Sundays, but the smaller offshoots;ie Shoppi and Atacs are open on Sunday mornings usually closing at 11.30am,but with limited stocks and sometimes higher prices.
Haven't been to Cherbourg for shopping in years in fact not since the demise of proper "duty free".
I'm sure that some of the Solent visitors can give more details of local conditions.

This site confirms Sunday closing in Cherbourg.

If they all close on Sunday, does anyone know what time they stay open until on Saturday ie. if I could get there by 6pm then would we be in luck.

Having been caught before by Cherbourg Hypermarkets being closed on 1st May even on a Saturday (they don't have days in lieu like in the UK) I e-mailed Carrefour for clarification. The Cherbourg Carrefour is open on Saturday from 0830 umtil 2100, French time of course and they will be closed on Sunday all day as they usually are. Normandie Wine Warehouse at the marina will be open Sunday almost certainly.

There is a small 'Shoppi' supermarket in the middle of the tourist area of Cherbourg. I'm fairly sure that I remember it because it was open on a Sunday.
Have a good trip.

We shopped for grape juice at the Cave Dubegny (sp?) on the equivalent Sunday last year. They closed at 1230 which we missed, and reopened again later in the afternoon, by which time we'd had the lunch and spent a great deal more in the Cave than originally intended !! Then they delivered goods via van with SWMBO perched on top, whilst the chaps (Me, Twister_Ken and another) staggered back on foot!!

Will look forward to seeing you there, all being well!

It has to be a 13-14 hour passage....So better set off dead early on Sat.....suggest Friday night to be there well in time for the shops and maybe a little look around....

Plan is to leave Gosport at 4am. I have found that after a hard week at work many people succumb to sea-sickness on a night sail, simply because they are knackered....
