I found an old thread discussing Sunbrella and Silvertex for cockpit cushions for boats in warmer climates.
How practical is this type of material for UK use?
There are lots of threads
This is probably one of the most recent discussions. Upholstery fabric
I have gone with the fabric coverings from Sunbrella
But most people use Silvertex and seem very happy with it.
The old PVC was the problem - sticks to skin etc.
IMO, Silvertex isn't the complete solution but does seem to be a good compromise.
I'm still very happy with the Sunbrella Natte range - see in the above link.
They do need to be looked after though - put away when not in use etc - but we used to do that with the PVC ones anyway.
In the cockpit, I have made some covers that go over the fabric when people are coming in from swimming in wet swimmies etc.
For the warmer climates, you say, I still prefer to sit on a soft fabric than a waterproof fabric.
But it is a personal choice.
Thanks for that.
I'm sort of thinking about getting the old cushions re covered but not sure if they'll stand up to the rigours of everyday life on a smallish boat where they could get a lot more abuse.
My SIL has sort of offered to do the work if I supply the fabric.
We've got silvertex upholstery on our boat in Mallorca, it's a mid grey colour, and it gets seriously hot , it's not a big problem as we usually sit on towels.
On the plus side, it doesn't stick to skin or get sweaty, and it does appear hard wearing.
We did our last boat cockpit (Sealine S34) with Silvertex and really liked it - as julians say, hard wearing and doesn’t get sweaty. It will be our first choice when we get round to getting our flybridge cushions re-covered.
