Hello,

Does anyone have an opinion on the pros and cons of the different engine options on the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 37(Yanmar 27hp, Volvo 29hp, Volvo 40hp)?

I would agree Yanmar every time as long as you are happy with the smaller engine.
I chose the volvo 40 to give better speed at lower revs (less noise) and for extra ''grunt'' when motorsailing into a seaway with a strong headwind.
The engine is still easy to access and I have watched when it was serviced with the engineer having no problems.
Fuel consumption has not been an issue although the longest motorsail was only 22hrs in a dead calm.
I average 6kts at 2000rpm and the boat is very responsive in close quarter handling.
In the end you pays your money and takes your choice.
good luck

Yanmar every time. Great engine reliable as hell, spares available worldwide (if your thinking of it, or just selling it) 30Hp is a bit light of a 37 footer, can you fit a 4 cylinder, if so yanmar do a 56Hp x 4.

When ordering my SO37 i asked for this option but was told it would not fit. This might have been a fob off as jeanneau dont make custom boats and if an option isnt on the tick box pro-forma then tough.
I think my gear ratio might be wrong though as i cant get on 'the plane' to enable water skiing ?!??

30 HP should be more than enough for a 37 ' boat , considering the Jeanneau's displacement. Couple it with a 3 bladed folding prop for a bit more bite.

Sorry Guys <s> spose 30 Hp in 37 feet is OK, but you have to remember that although I sail a lot I come from a fishing background and when you have 225 Hp turbo charged diesel in a 25 footer you can easily see my mistake? but then water sking is an option in that boat (which I hasten to add I have never used) Although I have done Ramsgate to Garrison Point (Medway enterance) in 63 mins.

Go for the Yanmar - I've one in my 5 year old SO 37 which is heavier than the new ones - Drives 5.5 kts at 2,900 RPM, two bladed prop takes a bit to get her going (or stopping for that matter, brown trousers required the first time I took her in the marina)

I've got the Volvo 29HP on my Sun Odyssey 34. At just under 3000 revs she does around 6 to 6.5 knots. I've been perfectly happy with the Volvo so far (after 18 months).
