Can anyone tell me if a sumo 1100w generator would be any use for running a small oil filled electric heater on my boat ?

Although the generator would be able to power a small heater, it would be a very inefficient and noisy way to keep warm. You would probably burn at least a litre of petrol every hour to provide one kilowatt. If you do not have mains electricity available, why not consider burning the fuel (LPG or paraffin) directly to provide heat?

Yeah, I thought the same, but I was working on the assumption that he'll be using the genny for other stuff as well as heating, in which case he may as well.

If it's just for heating, spend yer dosh on an lpg/diesel system.

But it's his choice.

On our last boat we didn't have any in-built heating and we used to use a little portable gas fire.

If you get it from a caravan shop, you should be able to get a "safe" gas fire that will be certified for use within an enclosed environment and will automatically shut off if it falls over or if there were any em emissions problems.

They produce a tremendous amount of heat and are obviously very quiet.
