Summer\'s Here

Well, I know one Swallow doesn't make a summer, but I've just been down on the shore talking to a worm-drowner, and we saw a Swallow.
(bird, not steamboat)
That's the first for me. Anyone else seen one yet?

Re: Summer\'s Here

Swallows have been in SE for 10 days , Yellow wagtails, a real sign of warming temps 4 days ago and have seen but not heard a cuckoo .Also the wigeon have all flown off NE to breed in Scandanavia. Its pretty chilly today though.

Re: Summer\'s Here

Swallows first seen in Devon on Tuesday last week. Sparrows, tits and wagtails are building nests for all they're worth. My workshop has nests all along the shelves - sparrows, wagtails and wrens at the last count. The sound of male birds yelling at the tops of their voices is deafening around our yard. I'm trying to work out what they're saying. Not sure whether it's "come and get some here girls" or "[--word removed--] off mate, this is my patch". Maybe both.

Re: Summer\'s Here

Just noticed a pile of bird poo on the doorstep and looked up to see 2 swallow nests in the eaves with tails sticking out. They come back each year and make a real mess, Have also had yellow wagtails in the garden eating from the "lard ball" this morning...

Re: Summer\'s Here

I've noticed a few new visitors in the past week or so. Our pair of Dippers are in the beck and I spotted a Goldeneye duck bobbing along last week.
Our tits have been nesting all winter, even in the snow....

We know summer's here, 'coz there's an upsurge in Mobo vs Raggie, Racer vs Cruiser, and Colregs threads... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Standing at the station this morning - noticed that there was still plenty of snow atop Ben Lomond.

Summer? We're still wiating for Spring here...

Re: Summer\'s Here

We have had a swallow around a week.

Yesterday when the red squirrel went through the trees outside our bedroom window on his way to breakfast he (if he's not a she) was stalked by a crow.

My shaving was interrupted as SWMBO insisted that the crow should be chased away. Its still far too cold to be running around outside only in pyjama bottoms. At least my Uggs kept my feet warm whilst I was chasing it covered in soap.

Fortunately we are not overlooked by our neighbours on the other side of the river. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Summer\'s Here

No swallows inland down here, but there were skylarks over Chichester harbour 2 weeks ago and the first chiff-chaff in the woods near our house a week or so before that. If this is supposed to be summer, I'd prefer if it got a bit warmer as it goes along.

Re: Summer\'s Here

Swallows? Tits? Wagtails?
Hardly a mouthfull altogether.
I was walking the dog in the early hours this morning and saw a blimming great cock pheasant walking down the pavement.
Maybe nothing unusual... but this is in the middle of town miles from any cover.
Now that's a dinner!

Re: Summer\'s Here

had a huge Bumble Bee trailed with us and over us on the deck from about 3 miles out on Monday. How do they fly again?

Call me a traditionalist, but I like things to happen in the right order. I'll start looking for swallows after the daffodils have flowered.

They can't. Don't try and convince me otherwise - I put my faith in science.

dafs are flowered and gone in my garden!

Ours are just about to open. One or two early-bird suicide jobs recently, but the majority are still cowering.
